525403 2007-02-17 04:17:00 New computer with Vista Home Premium.

Cannot recognise new hardware. When I plug in the Canon printer, Vista announces that it has found drivers but " a problem has arisen. Please contact the device manufacturer." Of course the latter says it has been working with MS to ensure no problems. Same thing happens with my Microtek scanner.

It will not read any installation CD. A message comes up saying, "The directory name is invalid."

I have tried an external LiteOn DVD drive with the same result.

Thanks in advance for any help.

525405 2007-02-17 04:49:00 Hi I have a method I have used to install errant drivers on Vista for Printer & or Scanner.. now what ya gotta do is get the Setup program off the Install CD so to speak, or if ya cannot get that get the EXE Setup installation program that one gets when first get the device, usually from either the CD/DVD or Manufacturers Web Site, or where-ever, don't just get Driver Files, INF, SYS etc, and let Vista "Find" them as this sometimes can cause all sorts of Ahem .. problems..

Now navigate to that Setup EXE and right click it and select properties, then select Compatibility Mode, and set to XP.

Then the drivers WILL usually install in XP Compatibility Mode. This generally works well.

Failing that, what Speedy says is quite right, so hassle the Manufacturer to provide either suitable drivers OR a suitable work around until they can supply proper Vista Drivers.

525406 2007-02-17 07:33:00 Vista has some known problems with certain printers and scanners. I was with Vista for a couple of weeks, but reverted back to XP after having problems with updating drivers. I'll just let MS sort those out and then make the move back to Vista.

It sure is good, aside from the two problems I faced. Prettier and more stable than XP when I use it.

A Beta driver there for my Creative X-FI sound card.
No obvious Cannon or HP Printer drivers.

I am staying with XPSP2 for a while.
