| 526990 | 2007-02-21 22:22:00 | Having problems with a CD Writer and don't know if it is a driver problem or the hardware itself. A few days ago I upgraded the mb, cpu, RAM, and did a Repair of WinXP. This Repair resulted in a few problems such as Windows Media Player not functioning with a msdart.dll conflict. Can the CD writer's drivers be updated without me having to pull it out of the case in order to read what make and model it is? I checked Device Manager and saw "device working properly". Yesterday the writer managed to burn one CD but would not write when tried 3 other times. No problems prior to mobo upgrade. |

Have you got a different IDE cable you can try it with? Is the CD-Writer set to Cable select or are the jumpers set to slave or master? I would force either Slave or Master (depending on what else is on that cable) or change your IDE devices around and see if that fixes it. |

| 526993 | 2007-02-22 02:21:00 | It worked before. It should not need a new cable, or "changing IDE devices around", or changed jumpers. It worked. I'd first try "removing" the drive using the Hardware Manager, then shutting down and rebooting. The OS should be able to reinstall it. Sometimes drivers are automagically misconfigured. Of course, the drive might have failed. Coincidences do happen. ;) |

I have it going to the master and floppy to slave - will try swapping. Not sure what you mean by "Is the CD-Writer set to Cable select"; also do not understand "I would force either Slave or Master". Is this through BIOS settings? Will also go to Device Mgr and do as you say. Speedy, Nero was on the PC when we got it - probably OEM. I uninstalled it and put on Nero 7 Premium. |

And doesnt use slave or master. And shouldnt be connected to any hdd. It hasnt got 40 pins like an IDE cable, its got 34. Remove the IDE cable from the floppy if this is what u did. |

| 526996 | 2007-02-22 03:04:00 | Err what? A floppy doesn't use an IDE cable . And doesnt use slave or master . Sorry - I meant FDD - which is near the two IDE sockets on the mobo . The floppy works ok . I cannot remember now if I connected the CD Writer to the primary or secondary IDE socket . Anyhow I just uninstalled via Device Mgr and rebooted . Going to try to burn a CD now . . . |

Does not want to write DSE CD's or with a dodgy brand a friend gave me, nor will it erase or write to a rewritable but I have experienced this before - going from one PC to another, that is, from one CD burner to another. And I have read here on PF1 that some CD writers, probably older ones, will not accept certain brands of CD's. Finally I tried an Imation CD and it burned just fine. It also reads various CD's, including a PCWorld cover CD. So it seems removing it via Device Mgr and rebooting worked. Or maybe the CD writer is beginning to fail, 'writing when if feels like it'. Now I can return the PC to the office early tomorrow morning. The staff have been patient up until today - they have 'puter work to do. |
