526805 2007-03-02 17:21:00 2) Enabling Internet connection sharing for Xtra dial-up connection on my laptop

Wasnt the desktop 192.168.0.1 before?? If it still is, it needs to have ICS enabled thru the dialup. (on the desktop not the laptop).

You'll have to change the laptop's ip back to 192.168.0.2. Or else they'll (the ips will conflict).

What has the 192.168.0.1 ip? The laptop or the desktop now?

Did u replace Sygate with something else?

I would use something better than XP's firewall, if you're using this.

3) Specified Windows Firewall to allow home computer to access the Internet via a gateway.

The ICS option needs to be ticked on the desktop (under advanced tab), for the laptop to get onto the net. Nothing has to be added to the firewall for this (ICS to work) AFAIK.

And I still can't access the Internet on home computer! I can ping both machines to each other. However, the home computer can't ping to an external website. Where have I gone wrong this time?

What have you changed on the LAN properties/TCP/IP entries on either the laptop or desktop?? Anything?

526806 2007-03-10 22:17:00 Hey Speedy, just an update here. I have finally realised what mistake have I done :o : I did not specify the values for "Primary DNS Server" and "Preferred DNS Server" on my laptop, and as such it was not able to connect to the Internet.

Right now the configuration is as per bellow:

Internet <= Home Computer via dial-up => Wireless Ad Hoc connection <= Laptop

I have tried uninstalling Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and replaced it with Comodo as you have recommended, but it "just blocks off my home computer from connecting to the Internet". Where have I gone wrong? Right now I am still with SPF.

Lastly, does anyone know of a free and reliable (who doesn't want?) remote desktop program that permits me to remote control the home computer from my laptop via Ad Hoc connection? Windows XP's built-in remote desktop application doesn't work for me as I am not connected to a domain; same goes to Ultra VNC as I am not connected to a terminal server.

Cheers :)

After u installed Comodo did u go to the network monitor / tasks tab and select define a new trusted network?? You have to go here to add the NIC, so it sees the rest of the network.

And is ICS ticked on the main PC?? This has to be ticked too. So networked PC's can get on the net. I dont think it matters whether you're on a domain or not with Remote desktop. Just as long as both are using XP Pro, it should work.

526808 2007-03-10 22:35:00 Thanks for your prompt reply, Speedy. :)

Yes, I have defined a new trusted network by entering the IP values for the home computer and laptop respectively.

ICS is enabled on the main computer (that's why I can have simultaneous Internet connection on both machines!).

The home computer is running XP Home, while the laptop is XP Pro. They are connected to a workgroup, though.

Cheers :)

Yes, I have defined a new trusted network by entering the IP values for the home computer and laptop respectively.

Once u selected define a new trusted network, let it bring up the NIC on both PC's, then click on next, dont add an ip for either.

It should bring up the name of the NIC thats installed, and something like 192.168.0.0 192.168.0.255 alongside the name of the NIC thats installed.

The home computer is running XP Home, while the laptop is XP Pro. They are connected to a workgroup, though.

Doesnt matter, thats the default workgroup name, which can be changed. Change both to MSHOME. Is file sharing working?

You'll need something for the Home PC since Home is on it, which doesn't support remote desktop, but the laptop should work.

526810 2007-03-10 22:55:00 Yup, I can connect from the home computer to the laptop now. :D

However, that means I can't control the home computer from the laptop since the controlling part is not available on XP Home?

I will try out Comodo Firewall settings once I have got it installed.

Cheers :)

Good!

Correct. Altho there is a MS file for this, but I think its only for Home logging into another PC with Pro.

Not Pro logging into Home, so it communicates / connects from a remote PC.

526812 2007-03-11 00:19:00 just use VNC to control the home pc, make sure you load the program as a service SolMiester (139)
526813 2007-03-24 22:09:00 Dear all. Let's say call my home computer "A" and my current laptop "B". Right now, A and B are connected via WiFi Ad Hoc connection. If I were to acquire another laptop named "C" and connect it to B via LAN crossover cable, I would have to bridge the "crossover" and WiFi Ad Hoc connections in order to get all three to talk to each other, right? If that is the case, how would my IP setup be in laptop "C"?

At the moment, the numbers for A and B are as follow:
A
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

B
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Cheers :)

526814 2007-03-24 22:21:00 Just set it up like u did with A and B.

Just give it an ip of 192.168.0.3.

And point it to 192.168.0.1 / the main PC.

Only thing to do is, to try it (bridge the connections). See if it works.
