| 526133 | 2007-02-24 00:12:00 | haha this is awesome. i uninstalled a fair few drivers while windows automatically reinstalled them so i gave up and shut down while i was ahead. went to a party got home at 11am, then put the hard drive in the new rig, hit the power, found out i hadn't plugged the IDE cable in correctly and the the dvd drive was set to slave, fixed that easily (acrylic case meant i could see what i was doing and didn't have to remove anything), and hit the power button. it's 'O' for ORSOME, windows works fine. i installed all the drivers and asus overclock utilities, got the dual monitor setup working (and it worked first try) and everything works fine! no BSOD:) no 'issues':D no instability:nerd: everything "just works" and to think i had even printed out the instructions on how to do the repair:lol: oh, i have noticed that i got the power LED plug round the wrong way, or the LED is stuffed, either way easy to fix |

(www.imagef1.net.nz) do they mean to say i have upgrade/reformat my computer too many times over 4 years to use their software anymore? and to think vista only has 2 reinstalls:yuck: I had the same prob reinstalling XP a few months ago... had to phone MSoft and seemed to be talking to some woman in the states. She appeared to believe it was 'really serious' that I had to reactivate XP yet again, went through all the drama about 'why did I want to reinstall XP, was it only on one comp, what had I changed on my box'... give a guy a break Microsoft- if you make it too hard to install/activate your poxy program and make me feel like a criminal I might not want to go through the drama with the latest and greatest offering you want to sell me. I can see a little popup on a MSoft desktop somewhere: "I'm sorry, the client has determined that there is no viable upgrade path for this software, please press ESC to exit" :) PS I had old CPU, new motherboard, new HD, new vid card and it booted up OK, I also did a 'repair install' with XP already on an old HD, but with some other new bits a while ago... all worked fine |

OLD: *ECS (Elitegroup) 761DX-M754 with SiS761GX (north) and SiS964 (south) chipset, socket 754, DDR (and PCI-E, which it really shouldn't but does, creating stability issues whilst gaming) *AMD Athlon64 3000+ skt754 NEW: *ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe with nVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP chipset, socket AM2, DDR2 *AMD Athlon64 3800+ sktAM2 looks like whoever told you was wrong:p i have got an issue where CPU-Z (and nothing else) beleives my new CPU to be an X2 (dual core)... perhaps i should reinstall it... or with all these new overclocking programs just ditch it altogether |

| 526140 | 2007-02-26 07:54:00 | looks like whoever told you was wrong:p In your case, yes. The old pc that I upgraded had a 1.2 or 1.3 Ghz Athlon. Maybe if I put in a new Athlon instead of a Sempron, the old HD would have booted the 1st time. BTW, the person who told me is very experienced and knowledgeable. They did in fact say it was very unlikely but that I should try to see if it works. Other PF1 experts agreed, some saying I could not even get the HD data (and WinXP) back by using the Restore CD (accessing the Restore partition on the hd). To my surprise, Restore did work. |

What are you doing with this old gear? For a non-gamer like me it seems quite good for general use. |

For a non-gamer like me it seems quite good for general use. i've put a 320GB harddrive in it and was until about 3 hours ago trying to set up a linux based server. that wasn't going too well so i said "stuff it" and dug up my winxppro cd:rolleyes: It'll be used to store all my music/patches/crap where family/me/neighbours/future flatmates can access it without me leaving my gaming machine on. the server is quiet and hopefully will just sit there innocently until it needs more storage space. My rig will probably be prone to restarts/overclocking failures, gets taken out on LANs, lights up the whole room, is loud and likely to suck up ALOT of dust. so it's being put to good use, probably paying for itself in electricity savings within 6 months lol |
