No idea about Firefox though.

526114 2007-02-21 02:21:00 For Firefox, you can either use Mozbackup (mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/) or a firefox extension FEBE (https:) pheonix (36)
526115 2007-02-21 02:25:00 If you can get your computer to boot with the new hardware, you have a shot of simply reinstalling the mainboard drivers. There is a good chance however that XP will throw a wobbly and not even boot (it'll just restart before it loads).

If your chipsets are similar (ie going from KT400 to KT600) then there is more chance that it will work. I'd be surprised if it works going from say an Athlon to a P4, or from a via chipset to an nVidia one.

The newer versions of Acronis TrueImage have a plugin that allows you to image drives to any hardware (It removes the HAL and reinstalls all drivers after the imaging is done).

526117 2007-02-21 14:41:00 i were to 'repair' with the windows cd, would it allow me to keep all my files/installed programs?

yes

could i just replace all the drivers in safe mode?

possibly........IF it'll boot to safe mode.....

i've done heaps of these when systems needed new mobos etc.......just stuff the drive in and TRY to boot it.....quite possible it'll blue screen if so run a 'repair' install.......and again iv'e done the a LOT....and 90% of the time the install has indeed been quite stable afterwards......you'll lose nothing if you do a 'repair' install........if it doesn't 'blue screen' then sure boot to windows and install the drivers ..........

526118 2007-02-21 16:41:00 From my experiences I would say you have less than a 50/50 chance of it even booting.
If it does boot and you get your new drivers installed you will have on going problems with odd bits and pieces of old settings interfering with new ones.

I would suggest you buy a new hard disk and install windows on it. Then transfer what you want to keep from old disk if you must. I would prefer a clean install of all apps and just a transfer of files etc.

Or if you are satisfied with your back ups you could just re-format your present disk.
Remember! Do you have paper copies of user names and passwords.

I have just replaced a mb, cpu and RAM, keeping the old hd, WinXP Home. It would not boot but a Repair worked fine with all data and programs intact.

But as GF and others have said, it is not perfect. While WinXP itself is fine, I had to reactivate it via the internet, then had to reactivate (or whatever the term is) MS Office. Then WinMediaPlayer threw a wobbly with msdart.dll - following MS and other tech advice found via Google in the end I installed VLC player and am bypassing WMP. Then the %#X%&# CD Writer does not work all the time - managed to write one CD but not others. And so it goes. I may have to reformat and reinstall WinXP.

So if I were you I'd back up all data (Firefox and email are not difficult - google for advice or ask here), reformat, reinstall WinXP if you have the disk. If you choose Repair - as has been pointed out - this may not save you time when considering the problems to fix. Good luck!

You might like to have a look at Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Files and Settings transfer wizard.

Insert your new optical writer first.
