526154 2007-02-20 08:20:00 My advice - if you are getting a new computer/laptop/whatever you're gonna want to have the latest OS, right? Rather than buying a now...out of date (to a certain extent) OS (XP).

So what if it has a few bugs and whatnot? Look at it this way - the more people that use Vista now - the better it will be for everyone in the future. You gotta take risks sometimes.

526155 2007-02-20 08:51:00 I struggle to see why it is that a lot of people on here have a lot of hi spec pcs that they talk about yet some of them say they are having trouble running vista on them.
My pc is high spec not that high spec but it runs vista very well with no crashes or driver trouble etc, So why is it some of you are having trouble.
Id be very interested to here PLEASE some honest answers as this is just a question in general.

526156 2007-02-20 09:25:00 For a NEW lapto, the difference in price between Vista and XP OS is very minimal so money is not an issue here. A new laptop with Vista would have all the latest drivers installed by the manufacturer, right? Again no issue. The new laptop will be highly spec so it is capable of running Vista. What are the disadvantages of not having Vista (vs XP) when one buys a NEW laptop? ephesus (2509)
526157 2007-02-20 09:28:00 Of course you should go for Vista if buying a new rig, Though imo right now is not the ideal time to buy...But....Its not exactly a life threatening situation if you do. Metla (12)

Nothing, besides the new features Vista has that XP hasn't got.

Depending on what version of Vista is on the laptop/whatever it is.

526159 2007-02-20 09:35:00 If the laptop is shipped with Vista then it will have full driver support. The majority of users on this forum are very closed minded and are anti-vista. Realistically this is a stupid question! Read some reviews online and go into a store and use Vista for yourself and then make an informed decision on what is best for you.

Yeah this might sound like a stupid question until you go into a store and salespeople are pushing XP instead of VISTA. I find there is little difference in using both OS as a lay person. The fact that I am buying a new laptop, I would prefer to have the newer OS if there are no major disadvantages.

526160 2007-02-20 09:53:00 I suppose it all comes down to what programs you are running and weather their are drivers available for it and if those programs are compatible with vista.
What machine are you running Ephesus and have you ran the vista upgrade advisor to find out what version of vista you can run.

Pretty nonsensical advice on a help forum. Maybe the thread starter does not have the experience to make an informed decision, perhaps that is why he/she asked here.

Which is the more stable at the moment?

Which is the one that is thoroughly tested, it's faults know?

Which one has readily available software?

Which one can be readily upgraded to for minimal cost (once the bugs are sorted)?

Which one does not have drivers for existing peripheral you may not want to upgrade right now?

It might be fun helping people out of the poo when they struggle with a new OS.

Answer the above and you have answered your question. Obviously it is up to you at the end of the day, but my advice is that Vista is not like a shiny new car, it's more akin to a prototype car.

I'd leave Vista until at least service pack 1 is out and debugged.

526162 2007-02-20 13:16:00 Ephesus mate, if you wanna try something new, if you like the looks of the extra gloss, and your laptop has full hardware support for it (Presuming it should if they're offering to ship it with it) then go for it mate!

Of course if you've used XP then a few things are going to be in different places than you're used to but no fear, you'll get used to it over time.

Bear in mind there are still compatibility issues around the show, so you might want to be specific with what you're going to be using the laptop for and doing with it.

Personally, I'd stick with XP for now. Its been tried & tested and while its by no means perfect itself, its like comparing the tried & true with the new & improved. XP's been around a while, support is more readily available, more software works with it, there's more drivers for it... but in saying that, the world will no doubt be going the Vista direction, more stuff will be specifically written for Vista (and 64-bit Vista at that), games written only for DX10...

...but not yet ;)

Stick with XP for now IMO, and when it comes time for the next upgrade, THEN think about Vista as a serious option!

I think your comment is unfair to the majority. It is just that the closed minded ones make the most noise.:D
