526730 2007-02-21 07:41:00 Gidday peoples!
I have my desktop pc connected to a dynalink wired router. Our laptop plugs into this when needed.
I'd like to go wireless for both as long as I don't get a slower connection for my gaming on the desktop...
Whats the best way to go about it (what to buy)
Suggestions appreciated....!

526731 2007-02-21 07:47:00 Sorry I can't help directly with your query, but keep in mind that whatever wireless solution you come up with requires a decent amount of knowledge to keep your system's security intact. Greg (193)

526733 2007-02-21 18:52:00 What you need is some wireless adapters, PCI etc, then with a little configuring you will be connected.

And you will get a slower connection, ATM nothing beats ethernet for speed, also pings are lower and for online gaming pings are everything, though in saying that the pings wound probably only be a few higher depending on the range...

526734 2007-02-21 19:41:00 You need one access point.

Plug your Dynalink modem into the accesspoint. If you get one with a four port switch you would then plug your desktop into the access point, and connect the laptop wireless. (I cant see the point in having the desktop wireless if it just sits in one place) But if you must you will need a PCI wifi card.

Then enable WEP to make things harder to crack into.

526735 2007-02-21 20:18:00 Does you Dynalink router have more than one ethernet port?

If so, then just a simple Access Point plugged into one of the ethernet ports will do it. You could leave your desktop plugged in to the Dynalink that way and your gaming pings etc. won't be affected.

526736 2007-02-22 05:22:00 Thanks to the 3 of u...
I'll leave my desktop wired then, and do as suggested.
Cheers for giving me a starting point.

I f you want to game and go online, DO NOT use wireless, as it has too much lag.

i found 54Mbps wifi to be fine for gaming even at 11Mbps, but due to my range it was unreliable. nothing worse than being disconnected at random, especially when winning (or losing, making you look like a sore loser/n00b), and finding the server is full when you try to get back in:annoyed:

although i find it amusing in battlefield when i'm piloting and get disconnected/crash, leaving several angry and confused dead/parachuting passengers:rolleyes:
