526765 2007-02-21 06:54:00 Dear all. I intend to setup a wireless network within my house so that I can facilitate transfer of data between my newly bought laptop and the home computer. After buying a DSE USB Wireless 802.11g adaptor, I installed the driver onto the computer and plug it in. At that point, no connection was detected between the two machines. I then configured the subnet mask and the IP address of both computers to be determined by DHCP. Subsequently, I then change the security settings in such a way that no authorisation or permission is required to access the network. I have also changed the connection settings to allow the computers to "talk" to each other via ad hoc mode. With all of these steps done, the computers had finally managed to "find and communicate" with each other.

As a security-conscious individual, I then increase the security settings for both computers. I had configured both of them to use "WPA-None" and "AES" for "Network Authorization" drop-down menu and "Data Encryption" entries respectively. I have also input a password for "Network Key". I had also done the same thing for third-party wireless network software that comes bundled with the laptop. After that, I restarted both computers. To my great delight, I found that both still detected each other. As I select the wireless network to connect to it, I noticed that the validation of network key took a long time to process. Subsequently, the validation window just disappeared without saying whether an establishment of connection has been successfully made. I then tried to reconnect the laptop to the network, but the same thing happened again. Next, I checked through the security settings , but they are still the same for both devices. I had also tried using "Command Prompt" to ping the computers to each other, but the requests timed out every time. Also, the firewalls have been configured to allow communication between both devices via wireless. Could someone please tell me where had I gone wrong? Thanks!

Cheers :)

P.S. I also noticed that the changes that I have made for the third-party wireless networking configuration software on the laptop frequently disappear or simply revert back to the original settings. However, right now the settings are in accordance to what I want them to be.

526766 2007-02-21 07:12:00 Hi James. Try to disable Windows wireless and use the DSE's wireless. I had one experience where I have to disable the Windows' wireless in order to use the DLink USB adaptor.

There should be an option for you to either enable /disable Windows wireless .

526767 2007-02-21 07:15:00 Are the workgroup names the same on both?

What firewalls are installed on both?

I take it u have created and shared A folder, not shared the whole hdd on both?

And, I take it you're on broadband right?

And how far apart are the laptop and desktop? And are any of these access points?

Hi bk t. I have set both machines to use Windows wireless-networking configuration software instead to do the job. DSE one allows me to select either one (i.e. Windows or its own software one, but not both).

Hi Speedy. Workgroup names are the same, checked; Firewalls, I am using Sygate Personal Firewall Pro on both. I have specified both of them to connect to each other via "Advanced Rule"; Of course I have shared only a couple of folders, not the whole HDD! I am still on dial-up - hence the poor-man way of networking using ad hoc instead of a router (no offense to those ad hoc users out there!). :D

The distance between the laptop and the home computer is less than one meter apart. No other access points.

Cheers :)

Go into the LAN properties / TCP/IP on each and enter the ips in manually.

DHCP I think should only be enabled for ADSL not dialup.

Are the onboard LANS on both still enabled? Or did u disable both onboard LANS?

Thats ok if theyre enabled, just give the main PC the ip of 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 and default gateway as is. Dont forget to put the primary and secondary DNS in too. If u want both on the net.

And on the other / laptop subnet mask same as the main PC, and default gateway 192.168.0.2 (or whatever ip u decide to use on the main PC). And also dont forget to put the primary and secondary DNS server ip in (for your ISP).

If u want it to get onto the net. Also if the connected pc cant get on the net after u do this, make sure ICS is ticked on the main PC.

And the option is configured in Sygate if it needs one for ICS.

526770 2007-02-21 07:38:00 Hi Speedy. Thanks for the prompt reply. The configuration of IP addresses that you have suggested above had been previously successful in connecting both computers together when I used crossover LAN cable. I guess there isn't a reason why it won't work on wireless as well.

Do I need to enter the primary and secondary DNS server IP if I want simultaneous Internet connection? This is because I didn't need to specify it when both computers were previously connected via crossover cable.

Cheers :)

P.S. By the way, when I specified both computers to get an IP automatically via DHCP, I suspect they are instead automatically assigned by APIPA.

526771 2007-02-21 07:40:00 Sometimes different brands of wireless hardware have little issues when attempting to talk to each other. I would suggest winding down the security again and set the minimum amount of security you think you can get away with. I suspect if you have 2 DSE wireless dongles, everything would be fine but different chipsets and software can give less than great results. dolby digital (5073)

There's not much diff using Ethernet or Wireless on a network or the net.

On dialup anyway . The ip config is exactly the same. As my previous post.

When I set up wireless, I did the same thing, I did with Ethernet and it worked, on the network and the net.

Thats a good ?

I found that if I didnt put the primary / sec server IP, in on this PC (When I go thru the other PC, I couldnt get on the net). So, had no choice but to put one in. The main PC may not need the ips but the connected one might / will.

Putting the ips on to obtain an IP has NEVER worked for me, I've always had to put an ip in manually.

526773 2007-02-21 07:50:00 Hi Speedy and dolby digital. I have implemented the IP configurations as you have suggested, but still to no avail.

The thing is that, the next common security setting would be WEP. However, from reports that I have read on the Internet, it is not as secure as WPA. As a result, I would loathe to use it unless I am really desperate.

Cheers :)

526774 2007-02-21 07:56:00 For those who are interested, the "Wireless Network Connection" window says:

"Please wait while Windows connects to the 'Home' Network."

"Waiting for the network..."

when I try to connect the laptop to the network.
