2007-02-24 22:05:00 | With WinXP Home SP1, at boot up there is a reminder from the system tray that says "This version of windows xp is no longer up to date...". Without installing SP2, how can this reminder be turned off? | Strommer (42) | |
2007-02-24 22:11:00 | Get this (www.dougknox.com) and run it. You may have to reboot so u don't see it. From here (http://www.dougknox.com/) You'll never see a balloon tip again. Altho I wouldn't put it on the net either without SP1 or 2. Or without any updates. Its what I used to kill the tips, and there's another one there to kill Windows Messenger too, it removes it.

2007-02-24 22:17:00 | Thanks. Clarification: what exactly is a balloon tip? One thing that I would like to retain is this situation: when I use a USB pen drive to transfer data, before removing the stick from the pc, I click on the usb-pen-stick-mem icon in the system tray and wait until it says "safe to remove". So, will the fix given above get rid of useful things, or just the annoying MS reminders? | Strommer (42) | |
2007-02-24 22:28:00 | A balloon tip is what you're seeing. And like when it says there's updates when that shield thing appears. Well thats a good ? You may not see the it is safe to remove message if u turn the tips off. I use a USB flash drive took, but it comes with its own program, that has an eject option. I would say that script removes any balloon tip that XP uses. this (www.theeldergeek.com) Would do the same thing / disable and enable it.

2007-02-24 23:07:00 | Well, I did try that regedit while the pc was at home. Not sure why it did not work so will try it again. I am referring to: Enable/Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips This tweak disables the annoying balloon tips that appear adjacent to the Notification area. The [Notification Area] is on the right side of the Taskbar, adjacent to the Clock display. [Start] [Run] [Regedit] Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below. Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: EnableBalloonTips Setting for Value Data: [0 = Balloon Tips Disabled / 1 = Balloon Tips Enabled] Exit Registry and Reboot

2007-02-24 23:14:00 | The regedit thing should work, I tried it just changed the Enabledballoontips entry on the right to 1 in the reg, and rebooted. The balloontips appear again. vbs is a visual basic script.
