527542 2007-02-24 05:03:00 Hi Guys :)

On our dev/testing computer, a few months back (at the time dual booting XP & Vista RC1 (I think) (Vista was on a 2nd hard drive, which we no longer have) One day XP decided, it wont boot up any more (what happens is XP starts to load the XP logo shows up & then it resets it self),

I think what happened was a hibernation went bad or a programs crashed (I think it happened when we where swap between XP & Vista) & then windows crashed (This has happened one before & dad was able to fix it by doing a repair of XP, but that did not work this time, so dad will need reformat our C drive), But before he does that,

I want to check Our D (data) drive (to make sure we haven’t loss any data in it) & get / check that we don’t have any info we want to keep on our C drive (windows & program files drive)

Today I have had a quick look at this FAQ faqf1.net.nz & noticed a link to Knoppix - and a Fixing Windows with Knoppix guide &

I am wondering for some one who has NEVER in there life used Linux (part from once for 5 – 20 mins tried a Linux LiveCD from a PC World CD) (only have used a Mac & Windows from 95 ( maybe even early DOS just before 95) to – XP / Visa)

Would Knoppix be the easiest Live CD to use to do want I want to do??

PS: XP is on a separate 120 GB (I think) hard drive & is spilt in to two partitions (C & D) & the format of the drive is NTFS (I have got FAT32 on my laptop, so if I need to copy any data I want to keep on the C drive I will copy it to the laptop)

Any Question or want any more info let me know

Thanks :)

527543 2007-02-24 06:40:00 Probably not, though I haven't looked at the latest Knoppix. If you want a dedicated rescue CD with disc diagnostic and retrieval utilities and all that sort of lovely stuff, check out The Live CD List, (www.frozentech.com), choose Rescue in the drop down list and check the choices out (home sutes listed). I've used Insert, UltimateBoot CD (UBCD) and BG Rescue with some success.

I've also used a Mepis Live CD, which is generally easier to use for basic stuff like looking at files. e.g. Menu(/start) > System > File System Apps > View Disk Usage (click to activate) > right click on drive and choose Mount, right click again and choose "Open with file manager" or some such.

527544 2007-02-24 07:32:00 I think that Knoppix would be great for what you want to do. One thing that Knoppix will do is place any disk partitions on the desktop and then you only need click on them to view the files. You can copy the files to cd or dvd using K3B or to your network if you have one.

The downside of Knoppix is there are so many menu options and levels. It can take awhile to find anything!

527545 2007-02-24 07:54:00 I have used Knoppix 4 for just that purpose. However, I think a simpler live CD if you can get hold of it would be Puppy. It is very easy to use and is really fast at handling files. If you have a look on Trade ....... and do a search for any of the Linux distros, you will find that there is a guy in Palmy who advertises them at around $5 free post. I have dealt with him and he is quite OK. In fact, you could get three different distros for a total of $10.

I haven't installed Puppy as it uses a different boot program from my normal Linux system and tends to foul it up. But it is fine as a Live CD and is fast.

527546 2007-02-24 10:36:00 For somebody whos _never_ used linux before, absolutely!

Its got enough on there that if you really wanted we can help you through configuring Samba to share the files across the LAN, or remounting the HDD read/write so you can go from one HDD Partition to another.. whatever

Either that, or as mentioned by Dolby Digital you can use it to just burn off to Optical media with K3b!

Go for it Stu!

527547 2007-02-24 10:48:00 My first real dive into linux was with knoppix 3.3 (still use it) for the same reason, data recovery, it was straight forward then and I suspect with a latter release it will be even easier.

Go for it

527548 2007-02-24 11:32:00 I haven’t read all of the posts in this thread yet....., ( I will in the morning) but one question I meant to ask was, when burning Knoppix does it have to be burnt to CD or can it be burnt to DVD? stu161204 (123)
527549 2007-02-24 11:50:00 That depends on whether you download the CD or the DVD image. The DVD has a lot more stuff on it, but for this you don't need it. The CD should do fine. Erayd (23)
527550 2007-02-26 03:58:00 Update:

After about 3 repairs to XP dad has finely got XP to work again, woot! :D, no need for the Linux LiveCD after all!,

but I will keep a copy of Knoppix handy just in case XP every decides to play up again on our Dev/testing computer or on any of our 4 other computers… (but I will latter on this week (if I have no work) give Knoppix a try & see if I can get my head around it).
