527429 2007-02-23 08:52:00 Hiya guys,

I have a 4 PC network at my house. 2 of the machines are running XP home, the other 2 are running Win 2K. Heres the problem though....

Both of the XP machines can all see each other and share files etc... no problems... Both of the 2K machines can access the XP machines shared folders, but when a XP machine tries to access the 2K machine it gives an error message "ACCESS IS DENIED" - contact the administrator etc etc...this happens on only one of the 2Kmachines...

The 2K machine with the problem is logged on as me with full Administrator rights... and sharing is enabled... why is it that I am getting the access denied error message?

All machines connect through my combined router switch and all machines can see the internet and that works fine. Its just this issue with the XP machines being unable to see the 2K machines....

Any help appreciated, before I format the 2K machines and reinstall 2K!!:badpc:

527430 2007-02-23 09:01:00 What about firewalls? Any installed on any of these PC's? Speedy Gonzales (78)
527431 2007-02-23 09:18:00 Hi Speedy,

No firewalls are installed on the 2K machines. Windows firewall is active on the XP machines.

The firewalls on the XP machines do not stop the 2K machines from accessing the XP shared folders and network drive.

I can see the 2K PC that will not allow access in my work group.

This is my error message when trying to connect to the PC in question:

"\\Tempcontrolpc is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied."

527432 2007-02-23 09:20:00 Not sure if helps. Try having same login / password in both PCs.
Same workgroup?

Edit.
Sometimes they just won't budge in my experience.
One may work but the other may not work.
Sometimes change of hardware helps.
When I used a router it helped.

Find a good store that has a good policy.

527433 2007-02-23 09:52:00 Gidday again guys,

Something has changed on this particular PC, as it used to work OK and when I clicked on it in the "view workgroup computers" screen, it would pop up a log in box, I could log in, and then it would work OK. Now, for reasons unknown, it denies access. But if I go to that 2K PC, I can still access the internet, and see the XP machines shared files.

I reckon it has to do with some sort of network permissions?

Any other ideas guys? I am thinking of reinstalling Win 2K.... might fix this perhaps?:help:

527434 2007-02-23 09:53:00 Forgot to add... all PC's are in the same workgroup ( I can see them in the Veiw workgroup screen on the XP macines!)...so no problem there. Its got to be some sort of log in issue... NZMacka (11756)
527435 2007-02-23 09:55:00 Confirm read and maybe write access has been provided on the other computer?
Password is correct?
Is that login / password on that PC you trying to access?
