527408 2007-02-23 08:46:00 My daughter bought a Mercury, I know, don't yell, and has had nothing but problems . The latest one has been when she tried to copy photos from her computer to a cd . Easy you think, click copy to cd, hey presto, done . Nope . Sent it back to company, after a lot of hassle, she gets it back, with a new (supposedly)cd/dvd burner drive with a copy of Nero .

Right you think, hassle gone, it has come back from the manufacturer . Nope, still won't burn . We can now burn through Nero, but still not the easy way for her, as she is a learner, of saying 'copy to cd' .

They told us now that she has to reformat it and if that is the case, you would of thought they would of done it in the three weeks they had it .

My question is, what would reformat accomplish, and could there be something in 'file associations' that I have missed . I can get it to work through Nero as I said, and can now burn to dvd, albeit with errors . TIA

527409 2007-02-23 09:10:00 Umm, if you want to copy pics to a cd, you can format the cd/dvd whatever it is. (only if its CDRW u can re-format it)

BUT, if u want to play it on a standalone dvd player (these pics), you'll need something like Nerovision (or some program that can burn pics), and the cd/dvd shouldnt be formatted. Otherwise a standalone dvd wont read or play it.

Dont rely on XP (if this is whats installed) to burn to DVD. It doesnt support it.

You need a 3rd party program. A format of the hdd might fix it since you'll have to reinstall everything all over again. BUT then again if it still has probs, its a waste of time.

527410 2007-02-23 09:53:00 Thanks Speedy, I realise what you said about reformatting the cd, but on my computer, I could always burn a back up set of pictures to the cd, yes, sorry, she is using XP, just by clicking on the pics and telling them to copy to cd. Her's wont' do it. I mean on the XP folder, I just highlight whatever I want to copy, then on the left, I can click 'copy all things to cd'. On hers I can't do that.

As for the dvd, yes, I realised we would need nero, or something that would play dvds to be able to burn to that.

I am not sure if I have explained myself properly, will have to go back over what I have posted to make sure I make sense.

And yes, I am trying to get out of reformatting if I can, sheesh, the computer is only 3 months old, with only about 2 months of use, (if that) what with the keyboard packing up, then the monitor, then the cd/dvd writer.

Sorry, bedtime for me, I will check this thread again in the morning. Thanks for trying to help.

527411 2007-02-23 18:47:00 Reformat it??!!
What reinstall WIndows?
How extreme, at worst a Repair Install would fix any problems with WIndows.

Seeing as its not even crashing or anything, its just a problem with drag and drop CD writing........I doubt that will fix it. Kind of like opening an egg with a sledgehammer.

What happens exactly if she does the copy to CD method? An error message? Nothing?

Is Imapi CD Burning turned on in Services??

Its a hideous method though, you should teach her to use Nero properly, its not that hard with the wizard.

527412 2007-02-23 21:18:00 I thought reformatting was extreme too, and but thought they must of known what they were talking about . I have taught her, and written down step by step, how to follow the wizard .

She does get an error message, but sitting here, I can't remember exactly how it is worded, but only really gives the option to make an image . It basically saves it to where they burn from, but only the hard drive is available, not the cd/dvd burner for copying .

I don't know if Imapi CD Burning is turned on in Services but have written that down, so I can check next time I go into Christchurch to look at her computer once again .

Thanks for that, I have never had this problem, except when my cd rom died, so didnt know where to look to check that everything (settings) are as they are supposed to be . I did try going to properties, update drivers etc, but everything said it was working properly .

Ok, just had a quick look in my computer, can you please tell me where 'services' are found .

527413 2007-02-23 21:23:00 Forget the question about 'services', found them. Just not somewhere I normally play in. Thanks. supergran (108)
