| 527397 | 2007-02-23 07:04:00 | I'm going to make this brief. I bought 1x 1GB DDR2 533 RAM. It became faulty after 2 months from purchase. I bought another 1x 1GB DDR2 667 RAM to replace the faulty RAM. The reason I did this was I could not stop the operation of this computer for more than a day, anything longer and it's too much backlog for the business to handle (jewellers who's customers are based around the world). I tried returning the faulty RAM for a refund, but was pointed to a clause in the invoice suggesting no credit issues, just repairs/replacements. I'm now sitting here, with a docket, that says I'm waiting for a repair/replacement on this RAM stick that could take up to a week or longer to get. I have no use for this RAM, nor am I considering building any more systems that will make use of it. So what can I do? Do I have to wait for the repair/replacement, have I got no other options? I did tell them I didn't need a full credit on the new RAM I bought, just enough to cover what it cost me at the time I bought the old RAM, which is far less due to it being supplied as a complete system. It seriously had me wondering whether I should continue dealing with them too, I've been buying 2 computers a month from them as well as bits and pieces and it's rare that I had to return any parts. I already have 2 computers I need to build and also a server computer for March, and the only reason I deal with them is not due to price, but because they're close to the area I work in but these situations with faulty hardware should not interrupt any of the businesses I build the computers for, unless they are able to operate without it (though most of these computers are replacements for their old ones which they kindly donate after a complete transfer has been done). So anyways, what rights, options, choices do I have? Cheers, KK |

| 527399 | 2007-02-23 09:01:00 | Ram question Does it matter if you run two different kinds of ram if so then why. Also is the 512mb ram that costs around $100 or more ok to use. And finally is adata a good brand of ram to use. Hope you can help please. |

Their legal obligations end with repair or replacement. If it were a defective system system you might get a refund if they could not repair it within a reasonable time period, but not for a component. So long as they offer like for like you can't complain. Take the replacement and either store it for future use, stick it in your computer, or sell it. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 527402 | 2007-02-23 09:55:00 | Yes under the CGA it is up to the retailers discretion whether to give credit or replacement. Most retailers would choose replacement. Trevor :) |

Yes and no, different hardware can react differently, some doesn't like it, I prefer to keep everything the same, just keeps the probability of instability to a minimum (sheesh, try saying that a few times quickly :p "just keeps the probability of instability to a minimum" he he he :D) The more the RAM costs (like everything) generally means it is better than the cheaper stuff. Yes, ADATA is a good reliable and cheapish brand BTW technically there were no questions in your post ;) |

| 527406 | 2007-02-23 13:38:00 | As reality said, A-Data is ok, I knew it had some issues earlier on which dampened it's reputation, but it can rate among Kingston and Cosair which is what I believe top of the line. I believe A-Data started offering 2 or 3 year warranties which I would hate to maintain, but it shows they're willing to prove that they're reliable and this would help them out. As for me buying through retailers (not places like DSE or similar), there's marginal difference between wholesalers prices and it's not a big margin to be gained from it that I make up in my time put into the machine. A lot of the places I deal with import themselves, so it's not doing any good for our NZ Agents at all but if you shop around, you can find other stores selling it far less than the Agents so I don't bother with making it cheaper for the client, it's really my service that helps me survive. As a side note, a lot of these places make a killer margin from their larger RAM chips, the price basically reflects that it's bigger than the other chip, so it should cost more. The problem though is, any place can undercut their price due to this, so if you're persistent you can sometimes knock a 1GB chip to the price of a 512MB chip. Well it seems like all answers point to going through with the repair/replacement, it'll most likely be a replacement and if it is the same then I'll accept it, it's not a big concern, just it's not something I would want to keep either as it won't be long before it's phased out, so I have to think of something to do with it. I could sell it on Trademe but it's not the monetary value, it's more the viability of what I can use it for when I am no longer using 533 chips or motherboards. Well, it's nearing March, so I guess this primary school that was broken into could do with a new computer, so I'll build it for them. Cheers for all the advice, KK |
