| 527382 | 2007-02-23 06:28:00 | For a start Nod 32 , S & D, and Ad-aware all say my computer is clean. (1) The contents of an addon file, (called SAVE), have disappeared from my Outlook Express. File is still there ,but empty. (2) A file re-named "Bak" and replaced by another file has suddenly removed "Bak" and the new file has disappeared (3) Files downloaded as zips and opened and extracted to a folder have shown all the indications of installing themselves. But they just disappear. No sign of them anywhere. After two attempts I finally got them installed by dragging from zip folder. What is going on? |

But they just disappear. No sign of them anywhere. After two attempts I finally got them installed by dragging from zip folder. What is going on? I have no idea what is going on:- 1. So was there a file which someone sent you as an attachment via Email ( Outlook express ) and if so what did you do with this file? Was there a file extention? Like zip, doc, rar, txt, tar, gz or whatever? Did you save the file? If so where? Do you know where you saved the SAVE.* file? Very often if you use default it may save in OLK in a temp folder. 2. If you HAD a file called "SAVED.BAK" and you then renamed to BAK then overwrite the same file with another file. I am confused with this one. 3. A *.zip file does not install itself unless a self extracting zip file in which case it is likely to have a name like SAVE.EXE and you then have the chance to make a new folder/directory and extract the file to the new folder. If you have saved.zip which you downloaded then extract this file to a folder and then read the readme to figure how to install this to your application. You might find a setup.exe to run. You might find instructions on which folder/directory to copy all files to and etc. I am lucky ehough to have a fairly good memory. pressf1.pcworld.co.nz Now I am not here to jump all over you. You either want help or you don't. That "addon" rang a bell. |

| 527384 | 2007-02-23 09:18:00 | The *.zip files that didn't extract to directory were all bmp scenery files no executables among them. It's not so much that they didn't install , but what happened to them. They asked for permission to overwrite and then showed the extracting notification. But they did neither. They just disappeared. Dragging them from the zip the eventually overwrote as they were supposed to. The disappearing files in OE were all e-mail messages I wanted to keep. And passwords etc. I have used this system for years without trouble. Now for no known reason everone just disappeared leaving the empty folder. |

If you select all files within a folder then drag and drop then there is a possibility you may drop the files in the wrong folder or drive. I have done this myself in the past. You may think about using copy/paste. If you move files then they will not be where they were. If you copy then they should still be in the old location along with being in the new location. So go to the location where the files are. Then Edit, Select All, Copy. Then change to where you want the files copied to then paste. This using windows explorer, power desk or whatever. If you know a file name like FSBeechcraft.bmp you could always click Start, Search, All Files and Folders, FS*.bmp. Or even FS*.* Or *craft.*. You may need to go to an advanced search to ensure the file will be found in hidden files, and on what partitions you may have. I hope this helps. |
