527485 2007-02-24 02:27:00 Ah.... thanks Sherman.

Jack, you're on the wrong page. This page (www.ascent.co.nz) is the one you want if the one I linked to in my previous post doesn't interest you.

Yes thanks thats what I want.
What's the difference between the AData and the Transcend, apart from the price?

Flashcards (www.flashcards.co.nz)has this note at the bottom of each item in their USB Flash/Pen drive category...

"We will not sell inferior quality RunDisk or Adata USB Flash Drives. We have heard too many complaints from users about their poor quality, and many of our customers have had first hand experience with them failing and the local suppliers not standing behind any warranty."

527487 2007-02-24 03:53:00 Well I guess Flash Cards would have a better idea than us which flash drives give more problems than others, unless they just prefer to sell more expensive products for their own benefit financially . Ascent have been and still are selling them for as long as I can remember .

It is buyer beware, as always, but like I said I have had no problems with mine . Jack will have to decide for himself which one he wants to buy .

527488 2007-02-24 05:13:00 Some brands have a lifetime guarantee, there are others with just 12 months. PENTIUM (426)
527489 2007-02-25 00:08:00 I brought a cheap one from Countdown one day, and after a month it stopped working, so i would be cautious of real cheap ones. radium (8645)
527490 2007-02-25 04:04:00 I wonder how big they will be able to get!
Is 20 gig feasible?

527491 2007-02-25 04:21:00 they work just like another drive plugged into the pc you can copy ANY file to/from it quite easily with drag'n'drop......very simple to use no software needed unless you want to use it on win98

I have a Sony flash drive that uses a form of compression to save space - but it will not transfer files to any other computer not equipped with the same software. So watch out for this snag.
Of course its quite good at transferring files from my desktop to laptop because I have both computers set up to use it.
My other flash drive is normal - can be used anywhere without software.
Sometimes it works first time even. Mostly more trouble than a cat on a keyboard.
For small files I still prefer the old floppy especially where reliability is concerned. For giving files to other people - most of the people I know have a floppy drive still and if not then a CD suffices. Seeing that CDs are so very cheap these days I am forced to the reluctant conclusion that the floppy may just be on its way out. But the flash drive is far too expensive to give away. (Or even lend).

527492 2007-02-25 04:48:00 Thanks for asking this question as I was keen to buy one of those portable memory devices too. Currently I store stuff on CDs (but have just bought a new computer with a DVD drive) but they are not that easy to carry around and I do worry about them getting damaged. It would be handy to have something that I could copy files to and then open in another computer. What size are most of them? And what size would I need if I wanted to copy photos between computers? 527493 2007-02-25 04:49:00 Anyone ever used or heard of a Zip Drive?

I have an old Iomega unit on USB and it's fantastic for those short transfers and such . . I even have it shared on my LAN with three other puters .

I suppose they are rather dated . . but then again, so am I .

527494 2007-02-25 04:52:00 A reasonable size is 1 - 2 GB Beemer. You don't really need something like 4 GB. Although they're not that expensive.

They're big enough for most things. Depends on how many photos you want to copy to it. But they should handle quite a few.

Just don't save pics as BMP. Otherwise, u wont get a lot of pics on one of these.
