527475 2007-02-23 22:05:00 I use 2 Lexar Fireflys . . . ( . lexar . com/jumpdrive/jd_firefly . html" target="_blank">www . lexar . com)and another no-namer I got free in a stack of DVD-R's from Staples (http://www . staples . com/) (a large office supply store in the US) .

I question the need to inform the desktop that you are plugging one in or out of the USB ports though .

XP (of which I personally know) will allow you to plug it in or out without using the gui near the clock .

The only stipulation I can see is that you should make sure that all the files are closed and not in use at the time you remove it . . . . that's all .

For the correct terminology and identification of what they are, I offer:

Definition of:

USB drive
A flash memory card that plugs into the computer's USB port . Small enough to hook onto a keychain, it emulates a small disk drive and allows data to be easily transferred from one machine to another . Software drivers are not required for the latest operating systems, but are available on the Web for legacy systems such as Windows 98, Windows NT and Mac OS 8 . See USB drive kit . ( . pcmag . com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=USB+drive+kit&i=55812,00 . asp" target="_blank">www . pcmag . com)

Transfer Speed
USB drive vendors claim to use the same data transfer ratings as CD-ROMs, where each "x" equals 150KB . However, their math is often imprecise . For example, a 90x drive may be rated at 14 MBps, but a simple multiplication yields a different number: 90 x 150 = 13 . 5MB) . See CD-ROM drives ( . pcmag . com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=CD-ROM+drives&i=39417,00 . asp" target="_blank">www . pcmag . com) .

Known By Alternate Names
Also known as a "flash drive," "pen drive," "keychain drive," "key drive," "USB key," "USB stick" and "memory key," numerous brand names have also been coined such as Lexar's JumpDrive and Trek 2000 International's ThumbDrive .

Some products include synchronization software that keeps files updated between computers . See U3 ( . pcmag . com/encyclopedia_term/0,2542,t=U3&i=55804,00 . asp" target="_blank">www . pcmag . com) and USB . I HAVE noticed something new about these in the past few weeks or so . I cannot get them to show in My Computer when they are there . . . they USED to be there, but they aren't any more .

To get them back onto the Desktop, I had to go to the My Computer, right click and then click on Manage and find them there and drag an icon to the desktop . There they work like any other storage device . . . I just wonder why they are missing in the My Computer list .

Maybe I have changed a setting somewhere (any ideas?) . . . or it might've been a M$ update or so .

Memory Stick Pro Duo, 2GB, with MicroMate Reader

Well what you appear to getting there is a card reader along with a flash card. Now this item may be useful to a person who owns a camera. You can take the flash card out of the camera and insert that in the reader then plug into a USB port.

Micromate reader = card reader.

Link? Can't see that on Ascent or Flash Drive's websites.

This (www.ascent.co.nz) looks a good deal, why not go for that?

Jack, that is a memory CARD. You use it in things like sony cameras and PSP's. The micromate reader is so that you can connect it directly to your computer, it will act just like any other flash drive then...
You want a flash drive (or whatever else you want to call them). They are usually larger than a memory card, and a LOT more durable than memory cards are (because you dont have contact pins to worry about like on memory cards), in fact, my sandisk cruzer mini went through the washing machine the other day - a night on top of the hot water cylinder to dry it out, and it worked perfectly fine the next day, with all its data intact.

In ascent look under USB flash drives, not memory cards.

FoxyMX, look in the memory cards category in ascent - it is under sandisk.

Jack, you're on the wrong page . This page ( . ascent . co . nz/Category . aspx?majorcatID=63" target="_blank">www . ascent . co . nz) is the one you want if the one I linked to in my previous post doesn't interest you .

Press F5 in my computer. Or right mouse / refresh.

Yup I used to have an internal card reader. Only thing with these is, u have to unplug it from the onboard USB headers, (Everytime you reformat).

As XP's setup, counts it as a hdd. And it usually puts the hdd's out of whack (puts the main hdd as D). In the end it got too annoying, so I removed it.

And now I just use the card reader on the MFC printer, if I need it.

527483 2007-02-23 23:49:00 The other thing to watch is as has already been mentioned - use the "Safely Remove Hardware" before removing it.This is important, although others say they just pull the USB pen drive out and it never gives them a problem. I was recently using my USB flash pen to transfer files to a Win98SE machine. Despite installing the software required for the flash drive for Win98, it didn't acknowledge my "safely eject" request so I was just pulling it out after about 20 seconds anyway. It ended up corrupting the FAT and I had to reformat the flash pen so that it could be used again.

Never gave me a problem under WinXP or Linux. :)

Nope . . . and I tried that before . . just thought you had another trick up your sleeve . . .

I plugged in all 3 drives and F5'd till my F5 key smoked . . . never changed a thing .

Rt . mouse either . . . I don't get it . . . they USED to be there!
