527863 2007-02-25 01:34:00 Hi people,
(I m a linux newbie so do not go into too much details since I m still in the learning phase but any help would be appreciated)
I had got bored with windows so decided to install linux and have a little play around with it. So I installed fedora 6 on a spare machine I had and everything went smooth, got internet running and configured the basic settings.
Problem... I cant install any programs on the machine. It keeps telling me that python zope interface is needed. So off to google and i downloaded this particular program but when i click to install it it tells me something about error with dependecies.

So any linux gurus out there who can help me out, it will be much appreciated.

cheers

ron

527864 2007-02-25 02:19:00 Dependencies are a bit of a problem .

Very few programmes can just be loaded and work immediately . Often they require other pieces of code . . . often in the form of libraries --- what are called DLLs in Windows .

Linux doesn't have all of the possible libraries installed . . . if they aren't ever needed, they just take up disk space .

The libraries also have to be the correct version for a programme, even if they are installed .

First check that you have the correct version of the zope package, preferably a version specifically for Fedora 6 . This Google search looks to be the way to go: "zope fedora 6" ( . co . nz/search?hl=en&q=zope+fedora+6&meta" target="_blank">google . co . nz) . The first link gives a link to the Redhat Fedora 6 download area and is presumably the one you should have .

527865 2007-02-25 03:04:00 It's easier to actually install it from an update manager like YUM, learn yum and you should have less hassles with dependencies as YUM tries it's best to resolve all the dependencies for you with the repositories.

So if the program is called python-zope or zope, just open up terminal as root and do yum install python-zope and it'll access the internet, download the files if you accept and install it for you.

Cheers,

KK

Thanks for that Kame, I managed to install the software using YUM but I cant find the exe file to run it. I did a search and found the software to be installed but there is no shortcut or anything such as an icon that i can find to run the program. Any help??

527867 2007-02-25 17:15:00 Your executable will be in /usr/bin or /usr/share/bin and when you find it create a shortcut to it to go on yr desktop. kjaada (253)
527868 2007-02-25 17:39:00 Normally the program puts an item in the program menu somewhere. Have you had a good look around all the categories in the menus? If the application (?Zope) requires special setup configuration first, then do that following the documentation available on the programs website. Some programs are designed to start from the command line only, again the user documention should mention this.

You can also start programs using ALT-F2 and entering in the name or path of the program or file which launches it.

The program i installed is "bittorrent" and in the /usr/bin there is no exe file. All it has regarding bittorrent is the python files - bittorrent-console, bittorrent-curses and bittorrent-tracker and theres is nothing regarding bittorrent in usr/share/bin either.

I tried ALT-F2 and it tells me that "Could Not Open Location"

527871 2007-02-25 22:15:00 You do not have .exe files in linux.Did you find anything in /usr/bin with the name of what you installed. It could be a "gear wheel" or a text page. Also another place to look is in yr "home" folder and Clk "view" and then "show hidden files" kjaada (253)
527872 2007-02-25 22:19:00 Looking back at yr reply I would say bittorrent consul is what you want.right clk and clk create desktop shortcut then click on the desktop shortcut that is created. kjaada (253)
