1404893 2015-07-15 05:22:00 Another Auckland landmark probably headed for apartments. It won't mean much to people outside Auckland, but the Hollywood cinema in the old Avondale Town Hall has been around since the mid 60s. It used to be a real fleapit and its main claim to fame was showing Rocky Horror Picture Show late every Friday night - brought out huge numbers of people of varying degrees of weirdness.

More recently apart from being an ordinary small cinema it housed the Wurlitzer organ that used to be in Wellington, and the Wurlitzer trust spent oodles of money on restoring it, and had regular concerts with both local and overseas performers. I never went to the ordinary concerts, but regularly went to the twice-yearly programmes of silent movies with organ accompaniment. They were always a great afternoon's entertainment - typically a short comedy, an old public information film, also usually (unintentionally) hilarious and then the main feature. I've seen some great films there.

Apparently the Wurlitzer Trust have been taken completely by surprise and have to vacate the place in a couple of months with no idea what to next.

It will be a great pity if this old building gets reduced to rubble. It would be great to see it saved, but I'm not optimistic. We don't have a good track record for saving these sort of institutions.

Ah, that does bring back the memories. Been there a few times to see that movie as a teenager. Remember rolling Jaffas down the floor. :p

1404895 2015-07-15 07:54:00 I don't usually subscribe to the view that something being old, or having a rich history, makes it worth keeping. An old building is to me just an old building. If better use can be made of the space I'm all for it. dugimodo (138)

Was that the one where the "virgins" sat in seats upstairs and the regulars stood down stairs and threw rice and other food items at each other ??

.

What do you mean, used to be? LOL.

I'm sure they will move the Wurlizter before any demolition starts.......sadly Auckland is being converted in the likes of England with hideous apartments and joined together rat cage house.

I'm sure the organ will be moved - the issue I think is all the costs for a comparatively small group of enthusiasts. Just moving it at all will cost heaps, then there is the cost of storage, then the cost of (maybe) reinstallation, retuning etc. I don't think they will be able to do it without outside help.

+1 Although I only ever went there once.
