1404160 2015-07-06 02:33:00 A colleague of mine left Hungary at the time of the 1956 Soviet invasion and after an initial period in Australia, he finally ended up in New Zealand in 1961. I first met him ten years later and he was a good friend and mentor, having a significant influence on my future career path. Sadly he died many years ago in an accidental drowning, but recently some family members have contacted me and would like to learn more about his life in NZ.

He arrived here with another escapee/refugee from Hungary, whose name was recorded on entry as 'Jotvan Dudas'.

Since my friend had adopted an anglicised name at some point after arrival in NZ, I am wondering whether there is a likely english version of his compatriot's name, just as 'John' or 'Peter' have equivalents in other languages. It is possible that he could have changed his name informally, so I doubt that there would be any formal record.

Knowing an anglicised equivalent may make it easier for my friend's family to trace him if he is still living here.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers

1404161 2015-07-06 05:01:00 My mother is Hungarian.
She went down to Dunedin after learning english at the refugee centre and hung out with some others that came at the same time (1957), one of whom was an artist.

Jotvan doesn''t have an english equivalent....

There is a couple of Hungarian societies around apparently (my mum never got into that sort of thing).

1404162 2015-07-06 05:15:00 Thanks for that pctek.

Every little bit helps. There is a long back-story, best not told here, but he had children born in NZ who for various reasons never knew him, so naturally they are keen to know what kind of man he was.

He was a good man, but I realise that they are looking for more than just my experience and opinion.

Anything they can garner about him adds to their knowledge of their own history.

Cheers

1404163 2015-07-06 06:42:00 Hi Billy T - I had a similar, though less urgent and less inspiring, that your quest. I had taken a photo of a break dancer in Aotea Square, which one a couple of awards and recognitions and would
be my most successful to date. What I did was to email Ana Samways at the NZ Herald. I found out that he had returned to his native (Slovakia?). Anyway, someone amongst the Herald reader-
ship recognised him and I contacted through Facebook (though that is another story). I would try Ana Samways - you can get her email through the NZ Herald online, or if you contact me, I can send
by PressF1 mail. Let us know how you get on !!

Thanks for that, I will keep it in reserve at present because the family members' own research may bring up a record from immigration archives. Their search has been very comprehensive so far, one member is a computer programmer and sent an email world-wide to everybody of a particular surname and got back a reply with the family link he was searching for. Don't ask me how he did that, but it sounds like a hack of monumental proportions, however apparently it is no help for the current search.

1404165 2015-07-06 11:01:00 PCTek... does your mum still speak the lingo? She still has that quaint accent when I spoke with her last.

Billy - when my dad arrived here as a refugee from Russia around the same time he also changed his name to a somewhat anglicised version of his Belarussian surname. And coincidently he also came along with a mate who was Polish.

She can. But she no longer thinks in Hungarian, been here too long.
She has to think a bit now to translate in her head.....

The washing machine repair man is Hungarian, he talked to her in Hungarian last time he was there.

She doesn't mind, but when people do it to her when there are other, non-Hungarian speaking people around, it annoys her and she'll answer in english. She says it's rude.

Thats why I gave you those contacts, he may have been an associate - or knew someone who is, so perhaps that way you can track more info down.

Good on her.

No matter what the foreign language is.

I am very grateful for that pc. I'm leaving his family to make the first run over the target, but I have every intention of pursuing this search independently, as individuals think in their own way and may see things or follow paths that others might miss or ignore, thinking them to be irrelevant.

Cheers
