| 1411667 | 2015-11-20 21:28:00 | OK, here's an odd one.. As of quite recently (a few days...?) my browsers are not recognising forward and backward mouse clicks on pages like this :www.zdnet.com . i.e you click the arrow for the next image and nothing happens, and the link target is not being shown at the bottom of the window. The OS is Windows 7 pro. It is happening on all pages of this type, not just the example. It is happening on all browsers I have tried (Chrome, Firefox, IE). Other links on the page are OK I wondered if it was Adblock so I disabled it - made no difference. In fact ads on the pages were still not showing - WTF? If I fire up WIN10 in a VM, everything works OK. I'm wondering if it is a Java/javascript issue. Any ideas? |

Did the same to me with Firefox. I have had a similar thing....log in to a certain website, wrong password, then enter correct one and the login button is no longer reacting. Exit FF, go back in, do it again, all good. Weird but only the odd time or two so I haven't worried about it, haven't cleared cache, cookies any of that yet either. Might be an idea.... \ |

And why are the browsers behaving as though Adblock was still active? |

Malwarebytes and Nod32's online scanner if you want free Not that it's necessarily Malware but Defender is not particularly great when you suspect you have it. Ok as a baseline defence but needs supplementing with other tools such as those mentioned. As for the adblock issue, have you edited the hosts file or used something that does it for you? that blocks a lot of ad content. |

The problem was a HOSTS file that I had downloaded on someone or other's advice. I removed it and everything - mouse clicks and ads - all re-appeared. About the time taken for the scan - I do have quite a lot of data, but also Defender was scanning the files within all sorts of backups and installation files, which would have slowed things down as well. I didn't note the final file count, but it was well over 2 million. Thanks everyone for all the help. |
