528664 2007-02-27 10:07:00 Well, I took the plunge and installed a linux distro this afternoon. Im fairly pleased with it, most things are working great, I even managed to get a proper resolution on my widescreen monitor!! Very happy about that.
However, there seems to be a problem with the sound. I have sound, and it works, but the quality is absolute c**p, It is way distorted.
It looks like it is using the ALSA driver. (version 1.0.12 or something like that), and my audio is "conexant HD audio" which I believe is based on intel's HD audio specifications?
Can anyone give me any pointers to increasing my sound quality??
I am running kubuntu 6.10, with the latest updates etc.

Also, could any linux guru out there tell me how the heck I can access other folders apart from /home and /media? (without using the run command) Even if I log in as root I can only access these two folders.

528665 2007-02-27 18:06:00 I tried kubuntu once gave all sorts of problem but Im glad its working for you.
IM surprised that you are able to login as root through because if memory serves correctly kubuntu encrypts the root password so it cant be used, ubuntu/kubuntu prefer the use of the Sudo command

to browse the other folder levels open you home folder and where it gives a path (/home/yourusername) type in / that may do what you want remember if you are logged in as root be careful because linux does wants it told, no second chances, thats why linux purists recommend the use of sudo or su-
for that and other reasons, if you make a typo when logged in as root it could be fatal to your os but as a normal user a mistake can be usally recovered from.

528666 2007-02-27 18:11:00 See my thread on page 2 this forum. It appears Intel is not good with Linux for sound.
Also ref only 2 folders I think the media folder shows all the media that is mounted by Ubuntu
This means HDD's floppy cd etc.To see all yr files click on the media you have the files in.

528667 2007-02-27 19:17:00 beama, your right, I cant normaly get into root. However if you boot in recovery mode, it boots you strait into root (and doesnt require a password either).
kjaada, thanks for that info, really helpful

528668 2007-02-27 22:53:00 Don't run in recovery mode unless you are recovering something that requires you to use it. Running as root is a recipe for disaster. Also note that if I recall correctly, Ubuntu's 'recovery mode' is actually single-user mode, which means EVERYTHING runs as root - not just your session!!!! Erayd (23)
528669 2007-02-28 01:39:00 Bletch, I ran recovery mode cause I had made a minor mistake in my xorg.conf file while enabling widescreen (i inserted "" when I shouldn't have...) and so it wouldn't boot properly). I fixed the problem, made sure I could boot into x and then restarted normally. Sherman (9181)
528670 2007-02-28 01:50:00 Just an update, I finally found out how to activate root account.
Very easy, just have to create a separate password for it using sudo passwd, and one can now login as root (if necessary).
Still have crappy sound though...
I should probably go to the linux forums I suppose.

528671 2007-02-28 02:01:00 What the.....
My sound is absolutely fine this afternoon.
I recall installing some ALSA packages yesterday. They must have come into effect after a reboot cause my sound is perfectly adequate now.
