529312 2007-03-02 06:11:00 I was on the 2gb Max/Max Plan ($49.95) and have constantly monitored my speed via the NZDSL site (I don't trust Telecom). My modem has always said 800 up and anything from 5408 to 5088 down. From the NZDSL site I would get anything from 4170 to 4762 down and 607 to 653 up.

I had to go onto the Explorer 5gb Max/128mb ($49.95) plan due to a visitor from the UK wanting to Skype and a day after changing my plan, I get my modem saying 160 Up/6912 down. However, the NZDSL speed test says 2175/2142 down and 129/112 up.

What happened to my Max Download? Download Max cannot have changed in one day and therefore must be the Telecom software.

Don't flame if I am wrong. Just point out where my logic has gone wrong.

In addition, I notice my Max/Max 2gb plan is no longer available through Telecom and so appear to be absolutely screwed.

529313 2007-03-02 06:16:00 Well if u havent been on the planet, for the last month or so, everything to do with telecom is screwed, including Go Large.

Dont hold your breath for it to be fixed.

529315 2007-03-02 06:28:00 I believe I am relatively up with the play and have avoided the Go Large plan like the plague.

Nevertheless, I had to change plans because I work 2 days from home. However, I didn't expect Telecom to alter my download speed from my previous Max to an inferior Max.

529316 2007-03-02 06:36:00 What you are getting is a 'max download speed' more or less consistent with the 128kbps upload speed. If your upload speed were higher then your download speed would be faster, as you had previously.

Quote from here: www.clari.net.au

"Download Speed to Upload Speed Ratio

The majority of data shifted over the Internet uses TCP/IP. This protocol works by dividing your message up into small parts and then transmitting the parts to the receiver. To make sure each part gets to the other end the receiver sends back occasional messages saying which parts have arrived. These ACK messages limit the performance of the sender as an ACK message must be sent for each group of packets sent. Thus download speed depends on upload speed."

529317 2007-03-02 06:44:00 Thank you for your post. I have read the article and can accept the outcome.

It is a pity but not suprising that Telecom have dropped my Max/Max 2gb plan in favour of all 'domestic' plans being 128kbs up.

529318 2007-03-02 07:12:00 The Max/Max 2GB plan is still there.

529319 2007-03-02 08:32:00 You still should get better than what you are -
I am on a FS/128 plan and have just checked as follows:-

modem says - 6432 down / 160 up
nzdsl site - 3347 down / 132 up.

To compare what you are getting with someone else, with no other information is not a valid comparison.
You may be nearer to the exchange, have better lines etc etc etc.

On the re-vamped speedtest.net site I just got 6775kbps download speed from Auckland server with a max down/128kbps up Orcon plan. That doesn't mean to say everyone else will get that. The Xtra speed test site says 3936kbps. These speed tests are only indications.
