529081 2007-03-01 09:08:00 What are the pitfalls for buying 2nd. hand Microsoft software, i.e.XP or Office?
Can they be registered?
What must you get from the seller to allow easy registration?
What can't be registered?

Thanks,
B

529082 2007-03-01 09:12:00 Its not the registration u have to worry about, its the activation.

No activation they wont work for long.

Whether MS will let u activate either, I dont know. You would have to ring them

529083 2007-03-01 09:15:00 It's a risky business.

Technically you should assume that any OEM (for distribution with a new PC) software will fail activation.

With any other version there is no way that you will find out until you try to activate it, if it fails it's worthless.

You must get the original CD and the CD Key from the seller, but that is no protection, as if it has been installed and activated, you may be screwed. Also if it installs and activates OK but the original owner has retained a copy, and installs it, next update time you could be screwed.

No easy answer for "used software",

Do not confuse "registration" (optional) with "activation" (compulsory or it stops working)

529084 2007-03-01 09:40:00 Thanks.
Sorry, wrong choice of words using "registering".
I was aware that OEM is only for the computer that it was initially purchased with, and installed on. I have W98 OEM.
Sounds like you need a guarantee of money back if activation fails. Probably hard to get on TM!
Thanks again.

529085 2007-03-01 18:49:00 If you get the CD-Key (in it's original form, not just written down on a piece of paper) and the original software (so long as it isn't OEM), and Activation fails, ring MS, they will activate it for you. I have done it. If the person selling it has not deleted it from their PC, then they are the ones with the illegal copy, and they will have problems re-activating it if they ever need to. trig42 (11325)
