528980 2007-03-01 01:32:00 No you cant with 3.5" drives, they always need a DC Power pack usually included with the enclosure.

I think you can however, run 2.5" drives off USB - as long as it is the only thing running on that USB channel.

528981 2007-03-01 02:22:00 No, 3.5 inch drives need +12v, +5v and ground, hence a 4 pin power connector to the enclosure. a 2.5 inch drives only needs +5v and ground which USB is able to supply but all 2.5 inch enclosures come with 2 USB connectors to plug into on the PC cause a 2.5 inch drive draws ~1.2A and a normal USB port supplys ~500mA The_End_Of_Reality (334)
