2007-03-04 14:08:00 | "Xtra tell me to delete AVG " xtra are a bunch of complete and utter morons........this 'advice' is in the same league as such gems as 'unistall your firewall'........all you need to do is to go into the avg control center clik on email scanner settings and make sure that the scanner is set to use the same connection you use ordinarily. The most likely reason for the problem is that by default avg is set to use LAN for it's connection and unless you have broadband it will simply block the mail from downloading if you are on dialup or some other system.........i'ts very simple to change and I'll be pretty suprised if this doesn't fix your issue.........also you may want to check the settings in 'update' as well .......

2007-03-04 17:47:00 | Could also be caused by Zone Alarm if you have this installed. Add your email server name (its the same POP3 email server name as in your email client) into the Trusted Zones, ZA

2007-03-04 19:41:00 | Could also be caused by Zone Alarm if you have this installed. Its not caused by Zone Alarm. Its caused by AVG. Drcspy has the right answer.

2007-03-04 22:57:00 | Drcspy has the right answer.Sounds right to me. Except for the "complete and utter morons" bit. I used to work for Xtra and I resemble that remark! Uninstalling AVG would solve the issue. But we don't know if the operator suggested removing and reinstalling it, or what exactly was said. And disabling the email scanner isn't a silly cure either, as long as one is careful with what one opens. I use AVG too but have that feature disabled - it's a pain.

2007-03-05 04:10:00 | Thanks for the hints guys. Telecom helpdesk sent me a list of names of anti-viral software known to cause emailing problems & AVG was among them. They suggested I remove AVG but there was no comment on re-installing. Did in fact re-install from the March 2007 DVD disk - first one was a download from Grisoft. Problem still there though even after changing from server LAN to Dial-up in the settings. ZoneAlarm not active at present as I'm relying on XP's security software which is enabled - might try turning that off to see what happens. Thanks again Ganda

2007-03-05 05:25:00 | I've had what sounds like the same problem/error message twice in the past. Each time, it happened after an AVG update. (And once I'd decided that AVG was actually changing my Outlook Express settings. I switched to Avast! - with which I'm very happy - but that's another story) In both of my cases, though, the altered settings giving non-connection issues weren't within AVG, but in Outlook Express itself - i.e. the way you originally set it up for email to work. I don't remember which one was altered, but being led through the process (same as found in Xtra's website) by the HelpDesk fixed it each time. Two experiences like that made me suspicious enough of AVG to not give it the benefit of any doubt. So maybe check the actual email settings before fiddling further..? You might be surprised.
