Need a soundcard? I always thought to run 5:1 speakers you needed a soundcard?

529964 2007-03-06 06:16:00 Hi, I have had 1 big and 1 small LCD and it just frustrated me that they weren't the same size!, especially when you scan that wide wallpaper accross both screens for a very cool look. If you do get dual moniotrs, use 'Ultramon', its free and handles multiple monitors better than most programmes including Nvidia own software.

2 x 19 LCD will cost more than 1 22" Dell which I believe would be much better, trust me!

i have always had one monitor 2" smaller than the other, never bothered me.

each to his own i guess

wolfforest i'll take a photo when i find my camera, remember that you could always put that 2nd GB of ram and second monitor in at later dates to ease the load on your wallet.

529965 2007-03-06 07:11:00 ok, found my old camera with stuffed focus (long story involving a motorbike), so this is the best image (www.imagef1.net.nz) i could get off it...

that's a 19" LCD and 17" CRT

IMPORTANT: look again at that desk you want, and the keyboard width compared to the monitor space. you may want to check what size (www.everythingofficefurniture.com) screen you can actually fit in there, the gap is 448mm, my 19" is 415mm. good luck squishing a 23" monitor in there!

529966 2007-03-06 07:30:00 Will post a pic of like sized LCD screen tomorrow for ya!....LOL SolMiester (139)
529967 2007-03-06 08:00:00 The whole idea of the pic thing was just to see where you guys have your two monitors.

And Motorbyclist, the desk is simply the design. I know someone that will build it up specifically for my computer. Also who said I had a 23" screen? I've got a 19" WS. (Btw, nice case)

And this is more of what that desk will look like (It's still not to size)

Basically, the white space under the monitor is where a speaker will go. The little triangular space to the right of the desk is where the printer will fit and if I get the 5:1 speakers then I'll have two speakers on the two ends of the desk.

Could you recommend a place to put a 15" or 17" LCD screen on that desk? Remembering I'm gettting it built up so I can choose to have a shelf coming out of the left side of the other shelf next to the speaker for it or something.

Any upgrades have to be from the site above. I'd like to upgrade/change a few things in this pc I am getting built but also keeping the cost down. So for example, I don't want to change to HD to a 700gb HD or the video card to 2gb etc. Just some minor stuff that will make it perform slightly better.

I thought of changing the E6300 to a E6400, is this a good choice? If not what else can you suggest (Remembering only minor things/upgrades)?

For a speed boost get a 2nd hd the same and raid it with the one you have. Other minor things less noisy fans.

now.. other than that Minor = Free

Boost the CPU and Video card with overclocks

Get a really decent CPU cooler and have a play or google the motherboard cpu combo aor see what others are getting with "stock" fan etc.

Videocard overclock if you are into gaming. You could consider a pencil mod to give it some more juice along with an overclock.

529969 2007-03-06 08:10:00 Too bad half of what you said means nothing to me.

It's already been decided on what I'm gonna get, and I have to idea how to raid, or overclock so I don't think I'll even try.

529970 2007-03-06 10:56:00 a 2nd monitor on that desk? i dunno, possibly to the right of the main one as i find that more natural, but if you swivel in your chair you might hit those drawers... i'd try to put them as close together as possible so you don't have to physically move to see the second screen;) motorbyclist (188)

LOL ok then, the easiest thing to do get a 2nd hd the same and setup in raid mode. The shop should be able to do it if they are setting up the machine for you?
apsattv (7406)
529972 2007-03-06 18:52:00 Yeah, they are building it. Why do I want another HD though? 160gb is enough for me. And what does Raid mean anyway?

And Motorbyclist, to the right? Hmm I would've thought to the left...

Anyway I've got some questions about dual monitors, now that I'm super keen:

1) Which program should I use? I'm thinking go with Nvidia because it's a known brand?
2) Do they both start up on start up?
3) Can you drag icons across to the other screen?
4) How do you choose which programs to run on which screen? (EG MSN only on one screen etc, is it possible?)
5) What happens when you run a full screen app, like a game or movie?

Also, can someone answer if I need a soundcard to run 5:1 speakers?
