529534 2007-03-02 20:51:00 My USB 2.0 flash drive (no makers name on it anywhere) is kept in a socket permanently. A Sony flash drive sits alongside it.
When I boot up or come out of hibernation the Sony flash drive is recognised but the other isn't. I have to remove it and put it back again then it works.
I have tried swopping the sockets etc - no joy.
Any comments welcome.

529535 2007-03-02 21:46:00 Kill hibernation, then see if it does it again.

If it does, then it maybe a hibernation prob. You may have to see if there's a patch to fix it.

I hadn't exactly killed hibernation but did try just shutting down and then rebooting. No change. I also tried it on my laptop with exactly the same result.
Looking at the original box and instruction leaflet that came with the flash drive I realized that there was no makers name anywhere - not even a country of origin. There was an Internet address written in very small print which I tried. It led me to a local firm involved with hearing aids.
I reckon the flash drive is the problem - a cheap grubby item sold by Noel Leeming (who should know better) - but it does work providing I only insert it when the computer is running. So I'll accept it as is - I bet the darn thing keeps running for years now.

529537 2007-03-03 19:23:00 Why is in there all the time? It's designed to be taken out. pcuser42 (130)

You've got a point there I hadn't considered. I'm dead lazy I suppose is one answer. Another is that I know where it is if I leave it in the USB 4way drive I have sat on my desk.
Come to think of it I never leave a floppy in the drive because of problems booting up. So why do I leave my flash drive in?
But the Sony flash drive doesn't cause any problems that way.
Now I wonder if this problem is common or not! I would appreciate hearing what others find.

529539 2007-03-04 09:36:00 You are much better off only using the flash drive when you need it as flash drives have a lower number of read/write cycles than other forms of data storage and you are just shortening thier life by leaving them in the PC during start up. This start up creates a read/write cycle. As the no name flash drive does not get recognised during start up you are probably getting a longer life on it.
Having said all that, an answer to your problem might be the USB outlet itself. You will find some usb powered devices don't like working off a hub or an extension cable. They prefer to work off the Motherboard USB's directly. You could try plugging the no name flash drive into one of these and see if you have the same issue.
Remember to treat all data on a flash drive as more vunerable than most other forms of storage, so you should always keeo a backup of important data that you have on a flash drive.

Wow! I must admit I never thought of this situation. Obviously I have been reading the flash drive and USB Hubs propaganda and been well and truly taken in.
From now on I am going to make sure the flash drives I own are NOT left in the hub and will only be inserted when needed.
Now I know - it all seems quite logical and straightforward.

529541 2007-03-05 03:06:00 Come to think of it I never leave a floppy in the drive because of problems booting up.

Not im my case - I changed the boot order to the hard drive first. I could leave a bootable floppy in there 24/7, so if Windows becomes unbootable, it boots from the floppy automatically.

529542 2007-03-05 03:59:00 Thats if the floppy is a bootable one with the right files to load windows.

And not all USB devices like USB hubs. Some devices actually refuse to work at all, if theyre plugged into hubs.

529543 2007-03-05 04:13:00 It could be that that USB device gets confused by being powered up before the hub is properly initialised. There's a fair bit of microcomputing in the hub (and in the device) to handle the USB protocol. Graham L (2)
