530485 2007-03-05 20:53:00 Over the weekend it would seem some kind of virus has altered my system so that other computers in my workgroup can no longer access my computer. I am able to access the other workgroup computers. I am running Norton Internet Security with the firewall turned on. Even if turned off the problem remains and I cannot turn the Windows firewall off as it says a group policy now controls this.

I would appreciate any suggestions to get this going again.

530486 2007-03-05 21:03:00 Whatever you got hit by most probably put something in the registry and disabled the firewall and/or AV program.

Get Trojan remover in my sig below. Install it, run and click on scan. (update it first)

Then select the 3rd to 7th option under the utilities menu.

Trojan Remover found something astray and fixed it but my computer is still out of reach by the others on the network. Any further ideas?

Did u select the 3rd to 7th option in the utilities menu as well?

You may have to check if anything has gone from the LAN properties/TCP/IP entry.

530490 2007-03-06 05:03:00 Hi well this is a common problem with networked machines what I recommend you do is get to grips with your NETSH command, XP is pretty simple to hopefully get things back to Normal anyway try this:

Open a command window,

then type exactly this --> netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (ENTER)

here is the article: support.microsoft.com

This should reset things back to Factory Fresh. Hope this helps.

There is also a little program call winsockfix xp, it does everything automatically here:

530491 2007-03-06 05:34:00 I have tried options 3-7 in Trojan Remover with no joy.

I have tried netsh and winsockfix with no joy also. I still can't turn off windows firewall either.

The message given to the computer trying to access is as follows:

"\\ComputerName is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not granted the user the requested logon type at this computer."

All help so far appreciated. Any further help will also be appreciated.

530492 2007-03-06 06:17:00 Can you edit firewall setting to allow file and printer sharing?

By the way, where is the group policy rules coming from?

530493 2007-03-06 06:59:00 Yes, I can access the exceptions tab on the windows firewall dialog window and it is checked with Group Policy "No". I do not have any group policy or domain - just a simple workgroup. Nomis (11962)
530494 2007-03-06 08:04:00 Whats the exact message you're seeing say about the group policy?

I think someone had a similar prob a while ago.

I think I just found the / a post (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) I was talking about
