2007-03-05 05:15:00 | New laptop came with Vista Home Prem. Tried to load my video editor - Cyberlink DVD Studio, but it wont install. Message comes up that config.sys needs more files - I thought config.sys was long dead but....maybe its to do with the compatibility mode. I tried to edit config.sys but I cant save the edited file. It does not appear to be read-only or hidden but it just don't wanna save - even asks me if I want to overwrite the existing file but wont do it. Turbocad installed but the graphics look a bit flakey. I'm tempted to just wipe the drive and install XP until Vista gets the wrinkles ironed out but I don't like giving up. Any ideas? I'm short of hair already and can't afford to pull out any more!!:waughh: | andy (473) | |
2007-03-05 05:40:00 | I seem to have read something about AShampoo and Vista having "issues" as to signing etc, and I think (might be wrong) that Cyberlink DVD Studio is on the AShampoo label somewhere too. Here's a site with some info: www.jakeludington.com l

2007-03-05 05:46:00 | If Vista uses config.sys it will be locked while the OS is running. This is to stop you sawing off the tree branch you are standing on. :D Make a copy of the file under another name and edit that. (Make yet another copy as a backup, incase you have to go back). Then you will have to find a way to rename the new file to config.sys. Does Vista give you a Safe Mode?

2007-03-05 07:32:00 | Thanks GraemeL - running in safe mode worked. Thanks Surferjoe46 - Cyberlink and Ashampoo are not related but changing the config.sys file didn't help. I have found that too much of the expensive software that I have bought and use regularly just doesn't seem to function properly in Vista and I'm not rebuying it all so I think the laptop can get XP pro installed and I'll maybe get another copy of Vista to play with on another pc that is less critical and see what runs, what doesn't and what happens in the future. Cheers.

2007-03-05 09:48:00 | The hack for Vista is apparently doing the rounds so you may not even need to buy a copy of Vista if you just want to have a play with it until Vista SP1 comes out later on this year. The article with 37 comments is here apcmag.com | winmacguy (3367) | |
2007-03-05 10:08:00 | Yea winmacguy I found that BIOS emulator tool yesterday and tested it today and it does work. I used my legit Vista Home Premium disc to install a copy of Ultimate then ran through the BIOS emulator tool and I have an activated copy of Ultimate. I have of cause deleted it now as it was just a test. :D
