530574 2007-03-06 04:55:00 Google up Ophcrack. It's a live linux with password cracking abilities (Yes, it has a legitimate use) bob_doe_nz (92)
530575 2007-03-06 05:08:00 Just a thought Ockerr... Are you getting stopped at the windows login screen - or is it a (black screen) BIOS password you're looking for??
If its the BIOS one - just clear the cmos on the mobo

530576 2007-03-06 05:18:00 Ok- but just what type of software/diagnostic tool do IT teckies have to bypass the password. As I said it only took him a couple of clicks to open the OS without the pasword. Not trying to look like some sort of hijacker but if it's so simple to bypass the password where do you look to find the solution? Is it from the "safe mode" startup or where. I'm thinking here not so much from the point of view of hacking but what if in XP Pro my password was changed without my knowledge. Just how would you be able to re-set it?
Regards Gordon.

530577 2007-03-06 05:40:00 You are absolutely correct. Microsoft did a deal with the Ministry of Education, giving schools a volume licence key for OS's and Office software, but we are absolutely not allowed to on-sell the software! This is a HUGE breach of the contract. For a school to be able to use a MS/MinEdu supplied OS each computer MUST have a legimate OS license already (Microsoft), so I suspect that the PC may have been sold with that legitimate license, rather than the Education deal one.

Nope -- all one had to do to get the OS and Office software was quote the number of PCs you intended installing it on. No existing valid installation was required. The OS was only for computers in school, not for staff or students' personal computers. (The Office software could be used on staff computers.)

(Admittedly I'm remembering the first round that I personally administered back in 2002 ... not the most recent re-negotiation. But that's the way it was back then.)

In any case, if it had the volume licence Win XP installed, would anyone think to un-install and re-install the original OS? "Probably not," me-thinks ... so it's most likely the education licence that's been on-sold, totally in breech of the contract.

Even back when Office 97 was "the thing," buying an education licence meant you were bound not to on-sell it -- even if you bought it as an individual. Buying it meant that was that -- it was yours, period. (And yes, I still have mine gathering dust somewhere :) ) So if the school had bought the computer/OS as an education deal before the volume licence existed, they still would not be able to on-sell the OS.

530579 2007-03-06 06:01:00 Hi OKKER,

Go look at this hole to access WINXP

pubs.logicalexpressions.com

I see however that you need an XP CD to make it work.

I stand corrected -- I have just read the most current licence agreement on the Ministry website, and yes, for the last round you did need a valid licence.

Mea culpa. :xmouth:

If you want people to help you, I'd suggest you be a little bit nicer to them. I'm sure you wouldn't say something like that to someone's face when you're in a business meeting, so don't do it here.
