530628 2007-03-06 11:43:00 My outlook programme has suddently started to take ages to do anything - if anything. Often an error of missing extend.dat appears. I have reloaded Office 2003 and got all the updates I can. I have also taken off Norton Anti virus, but still it is driving me crazy and is totally unusable. Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.:help: woobear (11956)
530629 2007-03-06 12:40:00 Best thing I can suggest is saving any data you require then uninstalling it, reboot, then reinstall. (Not Office in total - just Outlook). Greg (193)
530630 2007-03-06 20:19:00 How big is your inbox? If you have anything over 1000 emails in the inbox it can cause problems.
Try sorting the emails into different folders.

530631 2007-03-06 21:25:00 Could be a profile issue, do you have another user account on the PC to log into and test. If other acc okay, go to doc & setting, (the problem acc) (make sure hidden files and folder enabled 1st of course) then application data/microsoft/oulook and move the files to another location in order to recover later, then back to top of profile, Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and do the same there. Restart outlook. SolMiester (139)
530632 2007-03-07 09:10:00 Hi

Thanks for the advice . I did have a full in-box so moved this over . This stopped the error extend . dat . However, it still will not work, cannot delete or press send without the following error "cannot find Outlook . pst .

I have tried using outlook under administrator and it works OK . Tried taking out all the data from the files and re-starting, however it would not start - not sure if I did this quite right .

Not that good at deleting etc so before I do anything else how can I back up all my inbox and sent messages?

Thanks for all the help

530633 2007-03-07 09:47:00 Copy the folder C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook & C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

NOTE, you will have to tick 'show hidden files and folders' from within folder options>view tab

NOTE 2, the 2nd folder is where the outlook.pst file is keep.

Have a look for the file there. after moving the files to another location for keepsake, delete and outlook should prompt you with start-up wizard to re-configure. Once up and running, import your old e-mail from the .pst files you moved
