530475 2007-03-05 21:08:00 Hey

I am contemplating purchasing an external hard drive but are feeling abit overwhelmed. There are so many brands/models to choose from so I thought Id ask everyones advice on what to get or their experience with external hard drives.

I have about $180 to spend and would like anywhere between 80 - 200GB. I would like a brand/model that is solid and reliable (if there is such a thing anymore) and are definitely willing to sacrifice gigabytes for such.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

I have just purchased an External HDD and Acronis software but am really not in a position to help you as I lack the experience of others than will help. The Seagate HD appears to be a firm favourite.
Cheers.

Also google the model name and "problem" and you'll find out what trouble others have had.

530478 2007-03-06 17:38:00 Seagate, that is the ONLY HDD I recommend (along with quite a few others too) model is not important... (latest)

As for the case I have a Vantec Nexstar 3 and that is quite good...

Good thing about the box is, you can also switch drives if there is a drive in a crashed computer you need to get data off, for example.

I've got an external box that handles SATA and ATA drives. I've had some problems with Maxtor drives (data suddenly gets corrupted and everything gets screwed) but Seagate has bought them now, so that blurs the issue.

Also, they have some ultra drives with 5 years warranties as opposed to the usual 3 year, and I haven't had a problem with one of those.

I've also got a 8-year-old IBM deskstar which is described on the net as garbage but has run flawlessly all that time and is still running, so you never can tell.
