531048 2007-03-08 06:22:00 So how did this trojan get in?

Your first post said you have Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite.
Am I correct in assuming that's supposed to be both anti-virus & firewall?

And is that what merely "stopped scanning", then didn't seem to do much more to help?

I note that your latest post mentions avast! also.
Have you added that since cleaning up - or did it also allow the trojan in without warning you?

I ask because I've been trusting the combination of free ZoneAlarm firewall and avast! anti-virus to protect me adequately from trojans.
If that trust is misplaced, I'd like to know my precautions aren't enough - as I guess others would also..

If you were relying solely on ZoneAlarm's combination suite, this thread isn't a good advertisement for it.
Or is it that nothing protects against trojans, so anti-virus is all we can expect?

Edit: Forgot to say I also have Spybot's TeaTimer running. That warns me of registry change attempts.

It may depend on how fast the people who make these AV programs can suss out what a virus / trojan / worm does. A lot of these (a few 1000 trojans/worms/viruses etc) are made every single day.

So they can put whatever code is needed into their programs / definitions, then put it in their auto updates (or however whatever program gets updated). So people can keep their AV program up to date.

I don't think ZA Internet Security is as good as something like Avast, AVG, or NOD32. Which are fully fledged AV programs.

Take Symantec/Norton Internet Security for example. It may have the bells and whistles (firewall/Antispam/AV etc). BUT somehow, people still manage to get spyware/malware. Even if its installed, and running, and (supposedly protecting someone's system).

But no program is 100% perfect (ie: Windows ).

And its only coz most AV programs and firewalls, once they get hit by something like a trojan, it disables them. Whats the use in having it, if its dead? The only programs I know of so far that wouldnt shut down is Trojan Remover, which has a random filename generation option.

Which means it would be pretty impossible for something to shut it down completely. because it keeps changing its name.

And Comodo I would say, would also be pretty hard to shut down, if some trojan tried to disable it.

531050 2007-03-08 07:23:00 Thanks for that, Speedy.

You just reminded me that I had a burst at downloading Comodo ages ago
(probably late at night) & haven't thought of it since.
Guess it may only need SetUp...

Thought I'd try a change from ZA firewall.

531051 2007-03-08 10:41:00 No, I was just using ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite on its own. I just got Avast to get rid of the trojan. I have absolutely no idea how it got in because I have hardly downloaded anything plus I have a firewall in my router.

Its not a good ad for ZA at all but I like the fact that I only have one interface that is easy to change and understand. I am now running Avast but a lot of its feature clash with ZA so I'm just going to reconsider what I use. Will get back with what I choose.

PS, Comodo seems to get a good rep so I might just get that as well. But any recommendations for a good firewall/anti-virus combo?

531052 2007-03-08 12:04:00 I prefer an anti-virus that's designed to do that job alone.
And a firewall ditto...

It makes me feel safer than something trying to do several things at once.

Remember you can have more than one anti-virus, but 2 firewalls will fight each other. So it's ZA's firewall or Comodo, rather than both.

(I now can't find the Comodo I'd downloaded but not installed. Am wondering if ZoneAlarm ate it)

531053 2007-03-08 12:48:00 You can only have one anti virus active at a time, best idea is only to have one.

If you find the need to run heaps of security applications you probably haven't tried NOD32
