531536 2007-03-09 09:18:00 Hey all,

So, I bought some more SD-Ram for an older PC I have here, but the problem is only 256MB is showing (2x 128) when it should be able to have 512:

www.ec.kingston.com

EVEREST successfully identified it:
Gigabyte GA-6WMMC7 (3 PCI, 1 AMR, 2 DIMM, Audio, Video)

It says that both banks have only 128MB, but they're 256MB single-sided chips, so it should be 512MB total in there..?

Suggestions?
Have I missed something else obvious? :-/

Cheers

Chill.

531537 2007-03-09 09:45:00 on bootup wants the post saying about how much ram is fitted

also have you been into the BIOS to check settings there

the ram sticks should have a chip id number on it punch that into google and see want you find

531538 2007-03-09 18:53:00 With SD-Ram and old motherboards you can get this problem (all to do with Single sided and double sided RAM). You say they are single sided, the RAM link on that Kingston page is double sided.

Standard 32M X 64 Non-ECC 100MHz 168-pin Unbuffered DIMM (SDRAM, 3.3V, CL2, Double-Sided, Gold) Sounds like your Mainboard can only read 128Mb per 'side'.

If you take one of them out, do you still have 256, or 128 reported?

531539 2007-03-09 18:54:00 My guess is that you need double sided RAM sticks. The motherboard manual says 2 x 256 DIMMS. What you appear to have is SIMMS.

531540 2007-03-10 00:03:00 Previously he had a double-sided RAM stick (256MB) and a single-sided RAM stick (128MB). It only ever picked up 128MB of the double-sided RAM stick... :-/

I'll try putting it back in

Hmmmmmmmm. Have to think again.

I was not aware that the RAM installed previously may have had a problem.

531543 2007-03-10 09:27:00 its an 810 chipset. they can be touchy with ram. 512meg max, which mean 128 per side and usually low density chips required. otherwise look for buffered ram. tweak'e (69)

er................no

SDRAM is always a DIMM.......dual inline memory module.......

the difference between a SIMM and DIMM is that if you are using SIMMS, which on any modern board you WONT be cause they come in either 30 pin or 72 pin physical configurations, (a DIMM is 168pin), you will need to plug in TWO ram sticks because the SIMM only has a data width of 32 bit and the BUS on the motherboard uses 64bit so you NEED two to match it.......a system which uses SIMMS simply wont even boot with only one ram stick.

a system which uses DIMMS as do ALL modern systems you can plug in only ONE ram stick and the system will work fine because DIMMS run 64 bit data width thus matchin the bus 'width' and you dont need two sticks.......

531545 2007-03-10 14:43:00 the terms DIMM and SIMM do NOT refer to 'dual sided' or 'single sided' ram.....DIMMS may be either drcspy (146)
