531494 2007-03-09 07:16:00 We have broadband at home. At the moment, our main computer is connected to the internet using a 4-port router (not wireless).

We also have a second desktop PC in another room and would like to set up a wireless network between the two computers so that we have internet access on the second computer as well.

Basically, what is the most economical way to set up a wireless network which is also secure (don't want other people using our internet)? What are the minimum components required on top of the 4-port router we already have?

Thanks

You would then encrypt your wireless with WPA encryption and you'd be away laughing .

That cost me about $200 to do that, haven't checked the prices recently .

The other option is to get a wireless access point and plug it into one of the LAN ports on your 4-port router. You'll still have to get a wireless card/USB wireless stick for your PC in the other room. I'm unsure of the price diffference between an Access Point and a new Wireless Router/Modem, the AP is probably the cheaper way to go.

531497 2007-03-10 23:26:00 1) What is the difference between a wireless router and wireless access point?

2) Is it important to choose a good brand? (ie . does it affect performance?) If so, what are some good brands?

3) To future proof, what technology should we choose (G gen 54mbps, G gen 108mbps, G + MIMO, pre-N) . Price difference between the various generations is significant .

Hope you guys can help! Cheers .

531498 2007-03-11 00:16:00 Hi, you will not noticed any difference in performance of the interent with either ,bg or pre N. You would only notice the difference in speed when transferring files between the pc's.

Also, while USB NIC are convenient, they are never in the same league as a PCI wireless card, so I would go for that instead.
eg - wireless PCI card (ascent.co.nz)
basic firewall (NAT)adsl wireless router (ascent.co.nz)
True firewalee wireless adsl router (ascent.co.nz)
Access point (ascent.co.nz)

Note, these are just examples, try to get same brand wireless devices. (D-Link have compression software which speeds up bandwidth from 54 to 108
