531099 2007-03-07 20:49:00 I got this message earlier today on my parent's computer . I've read a little bit about it, and so I opened the case up and made sure everything was in correctly (tried 1 stick of RAM at a time) .

This doesn't even let me boot into windows; gets stuck at the load screen, so I can't run any type of diagnostics . Same thing when I try to get in on safe mode . Before this the system would shutdown moments after loading into the desktop, but would leave the fans running . I thought it was an overheating problem, or maybe my PSU was failing .

Any ideas?

Specs: They bought this thing from a store, so I don't know the details .
P4 2 . 66
1 512 and 1 256 low end ram, not even brand name .
agp ati 9000
and I think the hd might be dying as well (clicking every min or so last time it ran)

531100 2007-03-08 01:16:00 What OS?

Any other symptom apart from the drive clicking?

Ghost the drive or at least copy over using a boot CD, use imaging software if you have it or Linux Live CD such as found here (diagnostics) ( . livecdlist . com/?pick=All&showonly=Diagnostics&sort=&sm=1" target="_blank">www . livecdlist . com) and here (rescue) ( . livecdlist . com/?pick=All&showonly=Rescue&sort=&sm=1" target="_blank">www . livecdlist . com) .

If the HDD is dying, you don't want to be attempting to access it as that could accelerate the damage, hence the bootable CD .

Once you have made the data safe, work through the diagnostics given here ( . org/win5/kbestop . php" target="_blank">aumha . org), following the most likely first . While you've got that boot CD (after you've made the data safe), run a memory test, which most, if not all, the CD will have .
