532254 2007-03-12 04:58:00 Hi,

I have a PC here that just won't play sound. It appears to play, but doesn't prouduce any sound.

I've tried a spare sound card, fresh install of windows, all volume levels / muting options, driver updates, and I can't find the problem.

There are no conflicts or anything.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

532256 2007-03-12 05:08:00 Check that the Windows Audio Service is enabled in Services

However if you did a fresh install it should be enabled, but check it anyways.

532257 2007-03-12 05:14:00 Sorry, it's a Dell Precision 330 with AC97 sound. I used the Dell driver that comes with it, and also tried the Realtek AC97 driver, which causes spontaneous reboots when I try to install it.

I put in a PCI Vortex AU8820 card, same thing.

532258 2007-03-12 05:43:00 Im having trouble with parents comp with the bloody audio also george, It's a compaq desktop it has AC97 which keeps cutting out, so I installed a PCI soundcard Aureal Audio and the same thing happens, I'm begining to think its a mobo problem. It's bloody annoying. radium (8645)
532259 2007-03-12 05:45:00 and are you trying to play a cd or a sound file and have you tried different speakers/headphones etc ? drcspy (146)
532260 2007-03-12 06:05:00 I tried headphones with no luck - I'm using a known good feed into my stereo. A motherboard problem is all I can think of too, I'm going to buy a USB sound adapter from DSE (returnable) and see what I get. george12 (7)
532261 2007-03-12 06:22:00 if you have fitted a pci sound card then i doubt its the motherboard. check its not the speakers.

also check volume control.

otherwise repair the OS, a lot of the sound is built into the OS and it sometimes breaks. (no idea what OS you have but it may still apply).

532262 2007-03-12 06:24:00 you STILL didn't state whether you are trying to play a cd disk or a file .....it makes a BIG difference.....so which is it ?...or both ? drcspy (146)

It's not the speakers. It's a brand new install of Windows and it did it before this reinstall. All volume controls are at the correct levels. The OS is Windows XP Pro.

Sorry for not answering this. It's with anything - CD, file, windows sounds ...
