| 531553 | 2007-03-09 22:31:00 | I have just run the APC mag's DVD copy of Knoppix 5.1. I know nothing of Linux and would like to learn. Knoppix seems good. I can install a separate HDD and wonder if I can copy the APC's DVD copy onto the HDD so that it can run from there, or should I just leave it on the DVD and boot from there? Anyone got any ideas? Should I use Knoppix or is there a better version that I should investigate first? |

Stick with it for now and if you find theres something you'd like that another Distro offers (No idea what, but hypothetically here), then post here and somebody can suggest an alternative Knoppix comes with a HD-Install function... Back when I last used it, it was accessible by clicking the penguin icon down beside the K-Menu. It might have moved, but yeah, it'll install it to your HDD :) Let us know how you get on, but I say GO FOR IT! :D Cheers Chill. |

You just need to be aware that, for example, live CDs can't be updated so Knoppix won't do you any favours when it comes to security updates. Live CDs can't be infected with malware either so this isn't a problem, merely a design decision which is intended for a particular use pattern. For fiddling with Linux Knoppix is fine, but if you want a proper desktop designed for installed use you might want to try an alternative such as OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Mepis. These are all good starting distros but are only a small selection - there are many good options. |
