If you have any hardwaare older than 3-5 years it is likely that there may not be a vista driver for it. The most economical way to get visa is to buy it oem with a new computer, and because you need a fast computer to run it, it is possibily something you should hold off on getting until you are ready to replace you current computer. Remember that Vista is only an operating system and it doesn't really have too many advantages over xp at the moment for most users.

I think you'll find my Core Duo system is not 3 - 5 years old. My hardware is probably better than most, it's all less than 4 months old and high spec. I build my own computers so I'm never going to go to the store and pay for an OEM version as what I can build for $1300 the store would charge me $2500 or more for.

Vista Home Premium is $195 (well it is for me), so it isn't that expensive. I've played around with Ultimate in a virtual machine, but had some issues with video that I think has more to do with VMware than Vista. I'll probably go ahead and try it, can always reinstall XP Pro and wait a bit longer if it doesn't work out.

531656 2007-03-11 01:14:00 Cool thread, ask for user opinions and get rampant campaigning by a Mac fanatic who doesn't have a Mac against the OS he has never used but hates anyway. Sounds like a troll to me.

Highly worthwhile.

531657 2007-03-11 01:16:00 Okay, here's my 2 cents worth .

I bought a new (ASUS Z53jc) notebook last weekend . It came with Vista installed and my initial experience, as listed in a post here, was that some of my video editing software wouldn't even load, never mind work .

I decided to install XP pro instead of Vista . The first major problem was that I couldn't find any XP drivers on the ASUS website so I couldn't get much to work . I wrote an email to ASUS and received a reply the next morning telling me that the notebook was in fact a model F3jc and gave me a link to the drivers (great service) . I installed these and got everything running bar the soundcard . I loaded all my software and all of course worked sweet but the lack of sound annoyed me .

I visited the video editing software vendors site and discovered a whole lot of patches for Vista (don't ask - it just never occurred to me ok) . So I then reloaded Vista from the (YUK!!) recovery disk, reloaded the software and patches and all is functioning fine .

My overall impression of Vista (Home Premium) is probably coloured by the power of the pc . It has a T5220 core 2 duo processor (1 . 6 GHz), a NVidea 512 Mb video card, and a Gig of ram, which I thought was reasonable specs for a mid-range ($1900 @DSE) notebook but it seems slow compared to XP on the same setup . Vista wants to think about everything before it follows orders . It then asks you a couple of times if you really want to Run the Software, Go on the Net, Open a document etc which is a real pain but I believe there are ways to disable this carry-on . There seems to be so much security on board that you can't actually do anything - you'd think it had been designed by an OSH Factory Inspector!

Verdict so far? I think I'll persist with it on the notebook, which will probably spend most of it's life running Office apps . For everything else, I'll stick to XP on the desktop PC (An Athlon64, 3200) cos it works .

531659 2007-03-11 02:25:00 Ok it's time to decide whether to buy Vista as a birthday present to myself (sad I know). For anyone who has it already, how well have you found it works with other software? Would you recommend going for it now or waiting for a while yet?

Later, much later.

531660 2007-03-11 08:45:00 I got home premium installed on a p4 2.4 1gig ram, ati 9600 video. On vistas hardware compatibility test it scored 1, the lowest. I stuck it on anyway, it worked well, even with aero. I did find little things annoyed me like the time it takes to delete big files (1 or 2 gigs) this took ages compared to xp, the user account security not allowing some actions, like this major annoyance. I can't delete files from a usb flash drive, also if you want to copy a file over the original file on the drive it tells me there's not enough room. Whereas xp just over writes it. The screen layout in explorer is awkward, ie the positioning of the tree layout. This can and was overcome by giving the explorer shortcut a different target though. My logitech webcam, sound & modem don't work. I got the sound working with only 2 channels instead of 5 in xp. I bought an xfi card & got the driver etc from creative & got 2 channel sound. No one's sussed out the surround sound yet. I didn't bother about the modem & webcam. I like my pretty pictures when defragging the HD, vista's doesn't do graphics. Avast anti virus works exactly the same as on xp. Sygate personal firewall won't install, so you're stuck with vista's which is better than nothing but leaves you feeling vulnerable as there's no interaction. Everything I tried to install installed except for the firewall, funny that. These are just the things that spring to mind now.

I'll give it another while or so however long that may be before I have another go, hopefully by then some clever buggers might have sussed out how to circumvent some of the annoyances & make it behave how I want it to.
At least with Linux if you need root priveleges you only have to type it in. There have been quite a few times in vista you don't even get the opportunity, no access can't do it even as administrator. I can't remember what they were, but I can remember there were too many of them.

Pick the bones out of that lot. I don't like it any less than xp & I don't like it any more. I think it's too new & there's not enough support yet

I won't be buying an Apple PC - although that advert on TV is a bit of a laugh . I'm going to run Fedora on an old PC though, I've finally found some ram to resurrect it from its current home in the garage .

Vista - going to give it a crack and if it doesn't work out revert to XP Pro for a while .

Thanks Metla. Many of us wanted to say that, but didn't have the right way to word it diplomatically....
