531874 2007-03-11 08:10:00 She wasn't getting a flash drive installed, she said he put that in the back, checked something, presumably put it in the usb port, then said it was fine and left after being paid, just told her to reboot. It wouldn't boot up satisfactorily. Don't know why she hasn't called him back. Can ask her though. supergran (108)

.
Maybe the flash drive was ordered for the house next door..?

531877 2007-03-12 06:36:00 :groan: Thanks drcspy but we done everything you said with the f5 and f8 but it will not bring up a prompt for us to put those things in . Also it will not read the windows me instillations disc or the drivers disc .

We can get it into safe mode but then nothing happens .

When we press the f5 it brings up
keyboard error or no keyboard present .
At the bottom of the screen it has press f1 to continue or delete to enter set up . We tryed the enter setup and
it took us to cmos setup utility . We did not under stand that so we left it .

When we pressed f8 it brought up microsoft windows me startup menu it has got 1/normoral 2/ logged /bootlog . txt 3/ safe mode 4/ step by step confifuration .

We tryed 4 the step by step it said windows will prompt you on each command . but it would not let us write anything it just wants a y/n so we said y to everything but nothing changed .

we tried the 2 but nothing happened there either .

We can still access the task mannager by cont/alt/del after everything we tried thier is still nothing running in the task manager .

My sis said when she breaks something she really breaks it .

Laura when he left he told them to reinstall windows me . but it will not let them .

Has anyone got any more suggestions . Remember we are novices . But we can follow instructions :D

531878 2007-03-12 07:17:00 ok goto www.bootdisk.com and download a win98 boot disk file you then need to double clik it once you have it saved to the pc it'll then write some files on to a floppy, make sure you have one handy......THEN boot the problem pc using that floppy.......you'll get the a: prompt and then follow my instructions from there for running scanreg /restore drcspy (146)

but you said you can bring up task manager in safe mode.....did you try what i suggested by bringin up task manager then clikin on file/run and running the restrui.exe file to bring up system restore ?........or you could try file/run and browse to c:/windows and find 'explorer.exe' and then double clk that it MAY get the gui working (the usual desktop screen with the programs menu etc).......IF this works then go startbutton/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore......

Forgive me, but the keyboard is plugged into the right socket isn't it?

The Mouse and keyboard don't happen to be reversed by some chance?

To me "Keyboard Error" is a significant clue?????????

531881 2007-03-12 08:24:00 B. M Thanks but no everything like that has been checked.

Drcspy When we bring up the task manager there is nothing in it to click on.

We will try the boot disk. We will go to a computer store to see if they have a boot disk. if not we will go to a cybercafe and download it will let you know how we get on.

531882 2007-03-12 14:17:00 ah of course sorry mixed up between xp task manager and winME......

how are you gettin to safe mode if when you press the keyboard you get that 'keyboard error' message ?......

have you tried using the win98 boot disk as I've detailed ?

531883 2007-03-12 19:07:00 Do you have another keyboard you can try?

If not, just check the pins in the keyboard plug to make sure one isn't folded back .

I've struck this a couple of times and can't for the love of me think how it could happen .

I guess the point I'm making is that if the "Keyboard Error" message is coming from the BIOS then that will need to be fixed before you can do anything .

At power on do you get any beeps or messages on screen?
