531720 2007-03-11 03:02:00 Have a look at the March PCWorld for the slow down results when comparing XP with Vista. Put me off unless I win Lotto and upgrade my PC.. paulw (1826)
531721 2007-03-11 03:27:00 What are you using the laptop for . If work/business related, I'd stay well clear of Vista for the meantime, say a year 18 months .

If for personal use, then consider what software you want to run, i . e . will it run on Vista? There are very few reasons to use Vista at this point in time unless you're an enthusiast who likes to live on the bleeding* edge .

As for, largely Vista only being available pre-installed; ask for XP if that is what you want, if they won't supply it go elsewhere to some one who understands customer service .

If you make sure your new laptop is capable of running Vista, plus some headroom for service packs and new software, then you'll have no trouble with an upgrade down the track .

Just my opinion .

* I'd have preferred to use buggy, immature software, but felt it might inflame some of the more sensitive souls .

531722 2007-03-11 03:49:00 Here's a couple for your stash winmacguy:

www.osnews.com
www.winsupersite.com

Ta muchly! Will ad those to my list.
I would consider and probably expect Paul Thurott's (Winsupersite) to have a more favourable review although I have seen some of his previous reviews which were not all that flattering to Microsoft. His is probably one of the few higher rating Vista reviews out.

I think so far that the Vista review score would be 3 in favour (Peter Griffin of the NZ Herald has done the only other favourable Vista review that I have read at the end of January) and about 20 or so against (aka mediocre at this stage). It will be interesting to see if any of the reviews change as the year goes by.

531723 2007-03-11 04:39:00 I have Vista Ultimae on my Core 2 Duo with 2GB mem and NVidia 8800GTX card with 768MB mem on it. It sits on a 20GB partition whch is now 1/2 full but then I have installed quite a few other programs as well on C.
It works a treat and in my opinion works much better than XP ever did or will.
Ther are programs however that are incompatible with it so I dual boot into XP when I need the services of those programs. This is no fault of Vista but the program which many should be updated one day. If not there will be replacements in the future or dual boot.
You certainly need a bit of grunt if you want the works but if you just want the bsics then even my 3Ghz with 1MB and 7700 card handled it okay on the Beta vesions.

531724 2007-03-11 04:41:00 Please excuse my scepticism- but anyone who actually has anything good to say about Microsoft is probably employed by them for that reason or has a blinkered outlook to start with. Sorry, but any dealings I have had personally with Microsoft, whether it be a query or simply looking for advice has eventually led me through a maze of crap to end up back where I started from and no further forward. I have a theory (please correct me if I'm wrong) that Microsoft make life so damned difficuilt trying figure out their problem solving solutions that people simply go elsewhere to find out if they even have a problem and if their is indeed a solution-and often have to pay for the privelege! There are so many sites devoted solely to workaround solutions for M/S muck up's it defies belief!
From what I have read on this and other forums the concensus of opinion appears to be to stay clear of Vista for some considerable time. The local technician I use from time to time is of the opinion that Vista will probably never take off in the way M/S envisaged it would. The cost of replacing or upgrading many peoples computers plus the problems already known with Vista will be a major hurdle-and is it really all that wonderful in comparison to XP with it's own assorted problems over the years? Only my 10c worth.
Regards Gordon.

IMO most people will switch to Vista when they buy a new comp........ Think back a only a couple of years ago, when high end comps "boasted" nothing more than 20GB, 128MB and CDWriters. Nowadays 80GB, 512MB and DVDWriters are considered "base/budget"
IMHO what you need as a minimum to run Vista NOW will be basic machines of the future
The world is no longer flat!

Yes, it's almost always been so in the computing world . Though I wonder to what purpose if all that is happening is that you are treading water when the OS takes most of the increases in available resources rather than being, necessarily, able to run more powerful applications .

Is there a net gain?

531727 2007-03-11 12:28:00 Gordon62: Microsoft Software is easy to fix / diagnose / install most of the time.. so much so that I passed the first 3 Microsoft MCP exams making my MCDST & on my way to becoming MCSA, without even studying ;)

I have a few mates that DJ, make their own music tracks etc.

They found that when using the final RC of Vista (didnt wanna buy it) that because the OS itself was using up so much of the systems resources, constantly chewing through the RAM / CPU, that it made life as a DJ a hell of a lot harder & slower :(

And Im talking these are top of the line machines with 2GB Ram, 3.4Ghz P4's, sATA HDD space to burn, and decent graphics cards (I think one of my mates has a 6600GT, not sure about the other). Should be plenty, but its not...

531728 2007-03-11 15:02:00 Myself I cant see the point in buying new with an old operating system.

read 'tried and true and well tested' here instead
