| 532305 | 2007-03-12 05:35:00 | My girlfriend rang me today because she couldn't get her Xnet dial up connection to work on her Compaq laptop (XP home ed) . The dialing and connection part all go fine and the balloon comes up saying "connected at 49 . 2kb/s" but she cannot access any web pages . I got her to try both firefox and internet explorer and got her to disable zone alarm, still no go . Here is the weird bit . I got her to ping www . google . com and it was successful! So the next thing I got her to try was the IP of www . google . com in her browsers . Still no go . What the heck would be causing this? |

| 532308 | 2007-03-12 08:10:00 | If you use nslookup you should find that the IP number of Google is 58.28.4.2 You may be able to go 'ping 58.28.4.2' - if you get a response, the internet is working but you have a DNS problem. |

| 532313 | 2007-03-12 23:26:00 | nslookup gives me the following: nslookup www.google.com Server: 58.28.4.2 Address: 58.28.4.2#53 Non-authoritative answer: www.google.com canonical name = www.l.google.com. Name: www.l.google.com Address: 66.102.7.147 Name: www.l.google.com Address: 66.102.7.99 Johnd: The first lines (Server: 58.28.4.2) from the nslookup output shows which DNS server is performing the address resolution - in this case 58.28.4.2 is the DNS server of Xnet. For the record Xnet has a 2nd DNS server at 58.28.6.2... The address for google.com should be uncer the non-authoritative answer section... |
