2007-03-11 04:58:00 | My sis has somehow deleted most of her operating system . It goes through all the a drive, c drive, ram, etc checks, then just boots up to a desktop pic . When you control, alt delete, there is nothing working anywhere . Ps, the mouse works . My question is, where can I find a copy of a windows ME boot disc, so I can copy and put it on to floppy and send it down to her in Dunedin . Me might not be everyones idea of an operating system, but that is what she owns, so that is what we are going to try are reinstall . Other than that, anyone know any GOOD computer geeks in Dunedin that don't charge the earth to hopefully reformat it . Cos I can't . I did try, and won't play in the bios, and I had no floppy, and now am back in Christchurch . Feel free to msn me, or instant message . TIA supergran82athotmail . com

2007-03-11 05:26:00 | errrrrrrrrrr........and what do you hope to achieve with a boot disk ?....... try getting to safe mode by tapping F5 key repeatedly from poweron.....if you can and even if you have a blank desktop you can bring up task manager right ?....then clik file/run and use the browse button to navigate to c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe then double clik it......this'll load up system restore.....and hopefully there are some restore points in there.....if so just set the sytsem back to a date before the problem and cross your fingers

2007-03-11 05:32:00 | I thought a boot disc might put drivers or at least something of ME back so I could at least reformat, or get it to read the cd rom drive, which at present I can't get to work, with the Windows ME cd in the drive . I can control alt delete and get task manager, and that only gives me shut down, or stop messages, and even in safe mode, all I get is the same picture for the desktop . It goes through the boot up and shows the Me splash screen, but that is nearly all I can get . I can't click file run, cos there isn't any files to run . I know I am not making sense, but it is hard to explain . She did get a computer fixer in, he said nothing wrong with it, after putting in a flash drive, told her to reboot, took his $50 and left, and it still won't do anything . You just can't access anything except the task manager tell me to 'stop program', which nothing is running, or to 'shutdown' .

2007-03-11 05:34:00 | Thanks Snoopy. Can I just download that on my XP Ntfs desktop and burn from there. I sure don't want to affect my computer. LOL Sorry, I don't really know enough about this, but I sure know more than she does at present. I knew she should of made a boot disc, she didn't know. | supergran (108) | |
2007-03-11 05:38:00 | try what I suggested first.........a boot disk will do damn all for your problem it'll simply put you at a 'dos' prompt and there you'll have little to help | drcspy (146) | |
2007-03-11 06:00:00 | Ok, will send this thread down to my other sis, who has her lap top going, and see what they can do. Thanks. I was getting into safe mode with F8, it isn't any different I presume to your F5 key? | supergran (108) | |
2007-03-11 06:16:00 | F8 will work but F5 bypasses the boot menu and takes you straight to safe mode.......heres another trick......you can try F8 and get the boot menu what you are lookin for is 'command prompt only' .....ah cant remember if F8 will do that on ME or even if the ME boot disk will do that but I DO know that a win98 boot disk WILL give you the 'command prompt only' option.......take that one....then when you are at a dos prompt it'll say a:/ type in c: then tap enter then type in cd windows then tap enter then type in cd command then tap enter then type in scanreg /restore then tap enter this'll bring you an option of five previous copies of the registry you can restore the system back to ......using your arrow keys goto the oldest one and then tap enter and cross your fingers.....when it's restored the reg from that file then restart the pc and hold your breath and cross your fingers/toes etc......

2007-03-11 06:54:00 | Cool, thanks very, very much. I have sent the link from this thread to my other sis, and hopefully they can get it up and running. I will let you know how they do within the next couple of days. | supergran (108) | |
2007-03-11 07:30:00 | Did she do this damage after the "computer fixer" left? If not, why not insist he comes back & proves there's "nothing wrong with it."? Or was he hired simply to install a flash drive, nothing more?
