532333 2007-03-12 05:47:00 Hello fellow members

I run a small business and would like to buy a network capable accounting program.
Does someone have a suggestion? It does need to be GST compatible, be able to run various accounts with "classes" and "categories" and also be used by accountants.

Any replies are very much appreciated

532334 2007-03-12 06:11:00 The two most popular multiuser / network capable ones would be Quickbooks Premier and MYOB Premier.
They aren't cheap though with MYOB Premier at $1098 inc GST and Quickbooks at $1495 inc GST.

When you say 'network capable' do you mean multiuser? i.e. more than one person using it at a time
Or do you just want to be able to run it on any machine on the network but only one at a time?

Only one at the time and just for two users (computers)on our network as I am woking fulltime and my partner does the accounts. It would just be good if both of us could access it.

532336 2007-03-12 07:49:00 Ah well then any version of Quickbooks will do it as long as you put the data file in a folder that is shared on the network and accessible from all computers you want to run it on.
Pretty sure MYOB is the same.
I am using Quickbooks Small Business Edition here and have it installed on a laptop and a PC with the data file shared on a 3rd file server. I can run quickbooks from either machine just not at the same time.
I have also spoken to someone who uses both MYOB and Quickbooks every day and they say Quickbooks is the better software.

Which one is more widely used and is also used by the accountants?
Another point is; are both of the progs you mentioned able to download and insert the transaction files? I know for sure that quicken does that very well!

532338 2007-03-12 09:42:00 Banklink isnt a bad programme, i think they have another app to use for creditors, check it out banklink.co.nz SolMiester (139)
532339 2007-03-12 11:21:00 What do you want the software to do? Banklink is a great cashbook, and they now have a debtors and invoicing package. BUT has to be supplied by a Banklink agent - usually accountant. I can help with that if you want. MYOB & Quickbooks are full double entry, integrated debtors, invoicing, creditors, bank, etc. As far as which one is better, both the same. Depends which one you learn - you always know the 1st one better. MYOB will import bank statements. Banklink data originates from the banks. wotz (335)

1. I need it for running at least three to four different accounts(classes in quicken); my small business, a partnership account, household and my partners account(in total only two bank accounts). Two of those are GST registered. So, that's why it has to be GST capable.
2. I had an accountant suggesting Banklink. To me that "sounds" like the chipies skillsaw that only runs with the one builder's power cable? I might be wrong?
Does MYOB have the capacity of having those different "classes"? Also do the "classes" have categories in MYOB?
I tend more towards MYOB or similar?

Thanks

532341 2007-03-12 18:43:00 If you only want to record cash in and out then get a program that only does that - a cashbook. Banklink has great integrity, due to the info coming from the bank. MYOB have a cashbook as well as the accounting software. Not sure what quicken have. Also acclaim, cash manager, and plenty of others. Like I said, get the right tool for the job or you will be frustrated. wotz (335)

You have seen above what I expect from the software; what would you recommend?
Things I also like is to be able to "extract" reports, category or class so I can see where and what has been spend(e.g. Repairs and maintenance, phone, car running costs).
I am living in the Nelson area, and by the looks of it, you are also a local.
Are you running or working in accountancy?
