533892 2007-03-18 01:37:00 does reformatting a windows xp professional os also erases its os? if your reformat windows xp professional, will it boot after reformatting? or it just restores its factory setings by removing the excess programs? thanks...need answer now...my pc need it now..tnx jonkimnicko (10061)
533893 2007-03-18 02:09:00 If u do a clean install it'll format and remove everything on the hdd.

You'll have to reinstall everything again.

So if u want anything off it, you'll have to back it up (besides programs that have been installed). These will have to be reinstalled.

And yup, after u reinstall Windows, it will be bootable.

But if your system is a system like HP/Dell etc, it may have a hidden partition, it'll restore it back to its factory settings (whatever was on it originally).

533894 2007-03-18 05:45:00 Definition of format:

To magnetically prepare a disk to receive data. A hard disk must be formatted before it can be used. Formatting a disk erases all data previously stored on it.

Whereas a Recovery CD (or Partition) formats first then proceeds to reload the O/S and drivers and apps that were there when it was first set up in the factory.

Is there any way to 'see' the contents this hidden partition?

Wouldnt have a clue, I've never had a Dell or a system with a hidden partition on it. If I need to format I do a clean install.

BUT, I think wherever it is, you maybe able to burn it to cd or something.

Yes there is.

It rather depends on what operating system(s) you have and what third party software you have.

Partition magic will allow you to "see" partitions. If you unhide the hidden partition then it is probable that the computer will not boot.

There are other ways using Linux for example.

And you have to think about how many hard drives IDE/SATA you have.

You may have iso images mounted as well using alcohol120 and extra CD drives.

I would be very careful before making a hidden partition "unhidden".

If you have all the original CDs supplied with a Dell, HP, Aptiva then one CD or maybe two will restore the computer back to when you bought it. Bear in mind that if you used other software to muck about with partitions then all bets are off.
