533883 2007-03-18 00:17:00 I am attempting to open an xls file off a floppy but seem to be unable to do so. A message box appears telling me that the file cannot be accessed etc or may be read only etc but properties show it as an archive file. There is one other xls file on the disk which does the same, but all the others open ok. The disk is fairly well used, could this be the problem? Any suggestions on how to solve would be appreciated.

533884 2007-03-18 00:22:00 Have you tried copying the files onto the hard drive first?
If it can't copy them then the disk may be faulty.

533886 2007-03-18 00:43:00 bad floppy disk possibly

floppies are NOT EVER to be relied upon for storing valuable data......NEVER NEVER NEVER

you could try the Flobo Floppy Repair Tool

533888 2007-03-18 05:24:00 Update.
Tried that drcspy, looked as if it would wipe the disk, so copied what was able to be copied just in case. then run. Sure enough, I now have an entirely blank floppy disk. No harm done though as I am no worse off than before. I tend to concour with your suggestion that the disk is bad. The lost data was not of any real value, just a nusiance having to spend most of a wet, windy, Invercargill afternoon re-writing the file. Oh well, nothing much else to do anyway.
What would be your best suggestion for saving data/files etc that are constantly being refered to and changed, and transfered between several pcs, not sure if they are all usb friendly so pen drive may not be the answer.
Thanks again for your help.

533889 2007-03-18 05:28:00 If the data is small enough to fit on a floppy, why not send it about via e-mail? the_bogan (9949)
533890 2007-03-18 06:09:00 If it is being referred to reguarly but is being changed, floppy backups are probably best. If you really need a pristine copy, why not back it up to a CD or, if you have or can partition your HDD, why not copy, or backup, to another partition so it's always available but out of harms way on your work partition? 533891 2007-03-18 07:15:00 A good idea Bryan. This event has, if nothing else, reminded me of the importance of reliable back ups. I have already made a copy of my new file and others that I wish to protect. Ta again for all replies.
