533825 2007-03-17 13:04:00 Hi,
I bought a new laptop and also a netgear wireless router from DSE. I also have a desktop computer which i want to be able to connect to (file shearing and printer sharing) which is connected to the router by Ethernet cord. i tried setting up the network but the two computers can talk to each other using ping, but will not show up on the my network places (won't share anything). i have got the work group names the same. any ideas on what to do? Both computers work fine through the broadband modem though. so it must be some kind of a software problem.

Laptop: windows vista home premium
Desktop: windows xp home edition.

533826 2007-03-17 19:55:00 See if installing this (www.microsoft.com) on the desktop helps.

But u have to install XP SP2 to install this.

Did u share a folder on each??

533827 2007-03-17 22:55:00 after installing this program the laptop with windows vista can now detect the desktop on the network mapping but still it won't appear in my network places. i have shared folders on the xp machine but nothing appears, on the vista laptop the computer won't let me share folder because it can't find what it is sharing with, all it does is it keeps loading or sending info for more than 15 min and then says it can't share the folder. spaceman8815 (4112)
533828 2007-03-17 22:59:00 And are there any firewalls installed on the desktop?? If so what firewall?

Did u create and share a folder on the desktop, not share the whole hdd?

533829 2007-03-17 23:14:00 The desktop uses norton's internet security 2006, and the laptop uses norton's internet security 2007, i have added both computers to each others trusted networking number.

When i shared the folder i used my shared documents folder.

533830 2007-03-17 23:20:00 And did u let Nortons configure the network automatically, NOT add ips to it?

That would be the prob why both cant share. Its configured wrong.

If that doc folder you've shared doesnt work, create a folder on both and share it.

533831 2007-03-17 23:44:00 I just changed my nortons trusted settings adding the subnet mask number and now it sees my laptop, i also did the same thing on the laptop and now it sees the desktop. now i want to shar my printer but when i try ti access it on the laptop it says access denied, what do i do? spaceman8815 (4112)
533832 2007-03-17 23:51:00 Whatever PC the printer is connected to, go to control panel / printers and faxes.

Highlight the printer / right mouse / properties / sharing tab. Select share this printer. And just leave the share name as is. Whatever it is.

Then u haveta do the same with the other PC except u have to add the printer thru the network.

533833 2007-03-18 00:07:00 I did what you said and when i try it add the printer it says access denied (desktop has the printer) spaceman8815 (4112)
533834 2007-03-18 00:14:00 Well I dont know what the printer thing in Vista looks like since Im not using it.

But if its like XP's go to printers / add a printer. (In Vista). Make sure the printer is ON.

Then next, then select a network printer, then select connect to this printer. Then type in \\nameofthedesktop(computer name) \name of printer that showed, when u selected share this printer.
