533559 2007-03-18 08:22:00 OK thank you very much for your efforts and the knowledge you have shared - I do have a better grip on it now. "You want to build that in your back shed?" made me laugh and I think a long overdue penny of some sort dropped. Yes I get it -it is bit more complicated than just getting a plug and sticking it "directly" into the internet instead of plugging it into an ISP. Re-reading this thread again in the quiet of Sunday evening has been much enlightening than banging my head against it like I did before.:)

Thanks to you all and I apologise for some of my silly comments on Friday night. (It was a bit of a TGIF thing but that's no excuse.)
PS It was never about the net being free or because I have no understanding of business - I just couldn't see technically what they did, now I do.

Did you watch Sunday on TV1 tonight? See all the DSLAMS in exchanges? See people laying fibre optic cable and etc?

Just curious.

533562 2007-03-18 09:55:00 Perhaps you dont understand the scale of it now.
When I messed about with a direct modem connection to my friend, there was no internet. You had bulletin boards.

You want to build that in your back shed?
Thats why we pay $40 or so to an ISP.

You forgot FidoNet possibly. I ran a fully compatible BBS out of a caravan on one phone line in Tauranga. Only problem was I had to turn the computer off if I wanted to receive an incoming call other than from a modem. :-)

Outgoing calls were easy. Pick up the phone and dial. Incoming would get engaged signal. My 14,400 modem worked fine.

Figure who Sweep is. I am still with the same ISP.

Bear in mind that this is 2nd April 2001

Found the following - to bad I didn't find it before but might be handy for anyone else following this thread wondering the same thing.

What do I need to set up an ISP?
