533541 2007-03-16 13:11:00 Start here (www.internetlastpage.com/) and work backwards until you arrive here (http:), after you have visited them all you would have experienced the World Wide Web.

These pages are stored on computers(like your home computer only a bit better) connected to a big network called the Internet.

Your passage to the internet network and the WWW would start with the phone line from your house.

Who you pay for the data that passes through is up to you. If you want to cut out as many middle people as possible you would need to strike a deal with someone that runs one of the big cables out of New Zealand, these are normally called Tier1 providers, eg. Xtra/telecom.

Tier2 and 3 would normally buy a lot of data/bandwidth from the guys above, add a few services with their computers like email, hosting etc and on sell it to the home user.

To sum up unless you can make a deal with a Tier1 company you need an ISP. Or you could try writing a letter to all the other Tier1 companies and asking if they wouldn't mind if you joined them.

533543 2007-03-16 19:27:00 Well actually I think everyone's posted some helpful stuff to help you understand why you need an ISP to connect to the internet, just curious how you think it works and how you think you'd connect if you had no ISP?

For DSL for example, while Telecom terminate one end of your connection, to get to the internet you have to be terminated at the other end to someone who is going to carry your traffic. ISP's have routers to do this and radius servers who take your username and password, decide it's you and let you online as their customer.

They have DNS servers so that you can resolve names to IP addresses so they know where your traffic is to go as that's what the internet works on at that level, they then will have a core network which sends your traffic in the appropriate direction (international or national) and they have to have bandwidth for both in order to carry the traffic.

The power company analogy was great, if you didn't have a power company how would you get power? It's like asking if you can plug directly into the national grid.

533544 2007-03-16 19:31:00 And you say you are 55? My 3 year old niece speaks better english than you.

Why can't you understand the power company analogy that Metla used?
Without a power company you can't get power.
Without a telco you can't a phone line.
Without an ISP you can't get the internet.

You could hack into your next door neighbours wireless network or tap into their phone line or power then you wouldn't need any providors but you would be breaking the law.

533547 2007-03-16 21:04:00 I investigated setting up an ISP myself a couple years ago. I would have needed at least a thousand customers to break even, and several thousand if I was hoping to make a living from it. But then the amount of work to maintain it would've broken me, so I would have needed exponentially more customers to be able to afford to employ staff. I quickly lost my illusions! Greg (193)

The margins for those types of service providers are tiny, and then you have to deal with your customers, many of whom would require a lot of help to set things up, and ongoing support. I would far rather be an electricity supplier.
