533509 2007-03-16 05:51:00 Ok so the title says it all.

Hi all you learned and helpful people.
What does an ISP actually do? OK so they may 'provide' a filtering service for spam and viri and malware in general and cache a lot of sites but other than that (which you can do yourself) what do they do? Why do you (we) need them? I was yakking to a friend about this and they said IHUG started up just like that, a couple people thought hey we could set up our own ISP and avoid the charges.

I have had a look around online but came up with nothing conclusive.

TIA........m

533510 2007-03-16 06:00:00 Without an ISP you have no way of connecting to the internet. CYaBro (73)
533511 2007-03-16 06:08:00 Why not? What kind of plugs do ISPs have that u can't get for yourself? mark c (247)
533512 2007-03-16 06:22:00 ISP have the same plugs as the rest of us although they would be commercial grade. Why do you need to connect to an ISP?
Because they host internet services and because you would need to buy a large quantity of commercial bandwidth from Telecom and re sell it if you wanted to do it yourself and become an ISP.

OK thanx for yr reply but what does "because they host internet services" mean? Like apart from what I already said. And as for the 'large amount of bandwidth' well I was only thinking of your ordinary old home usage. But hey thanks like I said for yr reply..........m:thumbs:

533514 2007-03-16 06:53:00 Well lets see..............back in the days before the internet was invented I sometimes dialled up my friends phone number and we chatted and exchanged files via Hyperterminal type software.

So.........I didn't need an ISP.

However, you go ahead and ditch your ISP and connect to the www.
You'll find its a little trickier now.

533515 2007-03-16 06:58:00 A telecom type company contains among other things - cabling, servers, network switches (routers) which direct the calls and IP traffic flow ( allow you to visit other websites or make phone calls.) That is why we still need to connnect to an ISP.

I do believe however that the day is fast approaching whereby the likes of Telecom will be made obsolete with VOIP. All we as consumers will need is a domestic server in the house or basement that we link all of the computers in the house to. The server is connected to a network which is connected to other networks and servers ( like universities which were the original hosts of web based networks and servers)

I am sure that there are a few holes in that theory.

533516 2007-03-16 07:01:00 Great thank yu pctek. I have long appreciatted yr contributions here at pressf1 but that don't really tell me very much. So it's, "a little bit trickier", well I wouldn't be here if I wasn't interested in trickiness. So bypassing an ISP is a little bit tricky well whoop-de-do. mark c (247)
533517 2007-03-16 07:04:00 One small question mark c, how do you make a landline phone call without a telephone or telecom/testra/ihug etc?

If you can answer that you could be on the way to becoming the next big thing.
Something like Skype does come to mind but you would still require a network host of some descripition.....

What does that mean? I have no probs with having to be connected in some way. (and paying for all that ol' copper wire) just don't see why i should have to pay what seems to me like a toll to connect when the toll gatherers don't really 'provide' me with anything.
